Universal Plug and Play (English: Universal Plug and Play, UPnP for short) is a set of network protocols promoted by the "Universal Plug and Play Forum" (UPnP™ Forum).
The goal of this protocol is to enable various devices in home networks (data sharing, communication and entertainment) and corporate networks to seamlessly connect to each other , and simplify the implementation of related networks. UPnP achieves this goal by defining and publishing the UPnP device control protocol based on the open, Internet communication network protocol standard. The concept of UPnP is derived from Plug-and-play, which is a hot Unplug technology.
The network speed will not become faster after upnp is turned off, but turning on UPnP will help improve the network speed.
The UPnP system allows point-to-point connections between PCs, Internet interconnections and wireless devices. It is a distributed and open system based on TCP/IP, UDP and HTTP.
UPnP enables any two devices to communicate with each other under the management of a LAN control device. Its features include:
Transmission media and device independence. UPnP technology can be applied on many media, including telephone lines, wires (Power Line Communication PLC), Ethernet, infrared communication technology (IrDA), radio (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth) and Firewire (1394). No task device drivers are required; instead a common protocol is used.
User interface (UI) control. UPnP technology allows device manufacturers to control and interact with devices through a web browser.
The operating system and programming language are independent. Any operating system and programming language can be used to build UPnP products. UPnP does not set or restrict the APIs of applications running on control devices; OS vendors can create APIs that meet their customers' needs. UPnP allows manufacturers to control device UI and interaction just like developing regular applications.
Based on Internet technology. UPnP is built on many protocols such as IP, TCP, UDP, HTTP, and XML.
Programming control. The UPnP system also supports conventional application programming control.
Extensibility. Each UPnP device can have services built on the basic system and related to the specific device.
UPnP supports zero configuration, "invisible networking" and automatic detection; any device can automatically join a network, obtain an IP address, announce its name, check its own capabilities on request and detect other devices and their functions.
DHCP and DNS services are optional and will only be used if they are present on the network. Devices can automatically leave the network without leaving behind any unwanted state information.
