Deep understanding of js data types

javascriptdatatype

This article mainly shares with you an in-depth understanding of js data types.

In the ECMAScript specification, a total of 7 data types are defined, divided into two categories: basic types and reference types, as shown below:

Basic types: String, Number, Boolean, Symbol, Undefined, Null

Reference type : Object

The basic type is also called a simple type. Because it occupies a fixed space, it is a simple data segment. In order to improve the speed of variable query, it is stored in the stack. , that is, access by value.

Reference types are also called complex types. Since the size of their values will change, they cannot be stored in the stack, otherwise it will reduce the speed of variable query. Therefore, their values are stored in In the heap, the value stored in the variable is a pointer pointing to the memory where the object is stored, that is, access by address. In addition to Object, reference types also include Function, Array, RegExp, Date, etc.

Given that ECMAScript is loosely typed, there needs to be a way to detect the data type of a given variable. JavaScript also provides a variety of methods for this problem, but unfortunately, the results obtained by different methods are uneven.

The following introduces four commonly used methods, and briefly analyzes the problems of each method.

1. typeof

typeof is an operator whose right side is followed by a unary expression and returns the data type of this expression. The returned result is expressed in the form of a string of this type (all lowercase letters), including the following 7 types: number, boolean, symbol, string, object, undefined, function, etc.

typeof '';// string 有效
typeof 1;// number 有效
typeof Symbol();// symbol 有效
typeof true;//boolean 有效
typeof undefined;//undefined 有效
typeof null;//object 无效
typeof [] ;//object 无效
typeof new Function();// function 有效
typeof new Date();//object 无效
typeof new RegExp();//object 无效

Sometimes, the typeof operator returns some confusing but technically correct values:

  • For basic Types, except null, can return correct results.

  • For reference types, except function, the object type is always returned.

  • For null , return object type.

  • For function returns function type.

Among them, null has its own data type Null, and arrays, dates, and regular expressions in reference types also have their own specific types, and typeof only handles these types. The Object type at the top of its prototype chain is returned, which is not wrong, but it is not the result we want.

2. instanceof

instanceof is used to determine whether A is an instance of B. The expression is: A instanceof B. If A is an instance of B, it is returned true, otherwise return false. What needs special attention here is:

instanceof detects the prototype , we use a piece of pseudo code to simulate its internal execution process:

instanceof (A,B) = {
    var L = A.__proto__;
    var R = B.prototype;
    if(L === R) {
        //A的内部属性__proto__指向B的原型对象
        return true;
    }
    return false;
}

It can be seen from the above process that when A's __proto__ points to B's prototype, A is considered to be an instance of B. Let's look at a few more examples:

[] instanceof Array;//true
{} instanceof Object;//true
new Date() instanceof Date;//true

function Person(){};
new Person() instanceof Person;

[] instanceof Object;//true
new Date() instanceof Object;//true
new Person instanceof Object;//true

We found that although instanceof can determine that [ ] is an instance of Array, it thinks that [ ] is also an instance of Object. Why?

Let’s analyze the relationship between [ ], Array, and Object:

从 instanceof 能够判断出 [ ].__proto__  指向 Array.prototype,而 Array.prototype.__proto__ 又指向了Object.prototype,最终 Object.prototype.__proto__ 指向了null,标志着原型链的结束。

var iframe = document.createElement('iframe');
document.body.appendChild(iframe);
xArray = window.frames[0].Array;
var arr =new xArray(1,2,3);// [1,2,3]
arr instanceof Array;// false

if (Array.isArray(value)){
   //对数组执行某些操作
}

3、constructor

Object

Object?

4、toString

Object.prototype.toString.call('') ;  // [object String]
Object.prototype.toString.call(1) ;   // [object Number]
Object.prototype.toString.call(true) ;// [object Boolean]
Object.prototype.toString.call(Symbol());//[object Symbol]
Object.prototype.toString.call(undefined) ;// [object Undefined]
Object.prototype.toString.call(null) ;// [object Null]
Object.prototype.toString.call(new Function()) ;// [object Function]
Object.prototype.toString.call(new Date()) ;// [object Date]
Object.prototype.toString.call([]) ;// [object Array]
Object.prototype.toString.call(new RegExp()) ;// [object RegExp]
Object.prototype.toString.call(new Error()) ;// [object Error]
Object.prototype.toString.call(document) ;// [object HTMLDocument]
Object.prototype.toString.call(window) ;//[object global] window是全局对象 global 的引用

The shift from C/C to JavaScript requires adapting to dynamic typing, garbage collection and asynchronous programming. 1) C/C is a statically typed language that requires manual memory management, while JavaScript is dynamically typed and garbage collection is automatically processed. 2) C/C needs to be compiled into machine code, while JavaScript is an interpreted language. 3) JavaScript introduces concepts such as closures, prototype chains and Promise, which enhances flexibility and asynchronous programming capabilities.

JavaScript Engines: Comparing ImplementationsJavaScript Engines: Comparing ImplementationsApr 13, 2025 am 12:05 AM

Different JavaScript engines have different effects when parsing and executing JavaScript code, because the implementation principles and optimization strategies of each engine differ. 1. Lexical analysis: convert source code into lexical unit. 2. Grammar analysis: Generate an abstract syntax tree. 3. Optimization and compilation: Generate machine code through the JIT compiler. 4. Execute: Run the machine code. V8 engine optimizes through instant compilation and hidden class, SpiderMonkey uses a type inference system, resulting in different performance performance on the same code.
