Question:
MySQL has slowly occupied the market through its free and open source features. During the rise of MySQL, Oracle, DB2, etc. have adopted the rise of open source for some codes. I want to know MySQL's plan to face market competitors. What measures will MySQL take?
David Axmark:
Open source and free are two completely different concepts. Free is not really open source. This is the biggest difference. Although we are free, we are not open source. The so-called open source means that all the codes are made public. We just compiled them and you can use them.
As far as I know, other proprietary database open source projects are often "dead" projects within the company, and there is no demand from customers, so they are open sourced. For example (IN??) there are fewer and fewer users, and then it is open source.
Question:
Is this because these companies use open source to meet customer needs, and the ultimate goal is to make money? Why does MySQL need to be open source? Is MySQL's ultimate goal to make money?
David Axmark:
We have always been profitable, but we need to expand after growth investment. After expansion, we will lose money, but we can become profitable at any time. The existence of any company is to make money, not just open source or whatever. But the money we make is much less than that of ordinary software companies. Despite this, we are still developing very fast.
Question:
Can this be understood as the characteristic of "small profits but quick turnover", that is, making little money but quickly occupying market share. In your speech just now, you mentioned that there are still two companies at the top of the list, one is SQL Server and the other is Oracle. Faced with these two powerful competitors, what is MySQL's biggest core competitiveness?
David Axmark:
Let’s see.
Q:
I would like to ask Mr. Zhou. During the speech just now, someone mentioned that Chinese people do not understand open source very well. Mr. Zhou is committed to the cause of open source. What do you think about this issue? What do you think?
Zhou Qun:
I think there are differences between the Chinese market and foreign markets. I often hold meetings on some open source forums, including SUN. During the discussions between foreign experts and Chinese experts, the Chinese experts are willing to talk about compatibility with Windows. The foreign experts think that we should not spend energy on Microsoft. Because if you want compatibility, keep following Microsoft. Microsoft always says that anything it finds can be incompatible, so they collectively have some arguments about China's open source community. Some open source experts believe that with so many users in China, we still need to solve compatibility issues. We have a very good open source spiritual leader in China. He spoke at the meeting and said that because he participated in the discussion of open source in the world, he also talked about how China can cooperate with foreign countries to develop open source systems instead of closing the door to itself. When Chinese experts proposed compatibility with Windows, they encountered various problems, that is, no one would support you, and no one would pay you if you get it internationally.
