PHP是目前被广泛使用的开源编程语言（Open Source programming language），主要用于服务器端应用和动态网页浏览；截至2003年5月，全球有超过13,000,000的域名是使用PHP编写的（Netcraft的数据）Lerdorf于1994年编写了最早版本的PHP；PHP开始被广泛应用是在PHP4（2000年5月）发布以后；2004年5月，PHP5正式发布。

1968年出生于Godhavn/Qeqertarsuaq，位于格陵兰岛的靠近海岸线的一个叫做Disko的岛上。Lerdorf毕业于University of Waterloo
