Players new and old seek more power in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered. Some may remember the old ways, and some may not, and one of these is contracting Vampirism. There are quite a few perks to having the disease, but it still comes at a cost. NPCs may notice your condition, and traveling throughout the day does become a hassle if you don’t know the tricks to keeping yourself safe from the sun. But the first step is becoming a vampire, which does have a few steps involved to begin the process.

Becoming a Vampire

There are three ways to become a vampire in Oblivion, with some being easier than the others.

The first and easiest way to contract Porphyric Hemophilia is by joining the Dark Brotherhood. You’ll need to kill an NPC and sleep in a bed for their contact to reach you for further instructions on how to join. As you gain more ranks within the Dark Brotherhood, you can speak with the NPC, Vicente Valtieri, who will speak briefly about passing on his Vampire gifts to you.

From here, you will continue the questline, finishing “The Assassinated Man” quest and speaking with Vicente Valtieri once again. He will offer his gift this time around, allowing you to accept or decline the offer. If you accept, you’ll only need to sleep in one of the beds within the Dark Brotherhood Sanctuary. When you wake up, you’ll need to wait 3 days for it to become permanent. While time will only pass when resting or waiting.

This is considered the fastest and easiest way to become a vampire. You can find various NPCs that are easy to dispose of while also gaining a new questline to enjoy while you work towards your goal.

The second option will be from one of the past DLC quests that are now included in Oblivion Remastered. The area this quest takes place in does require higher levels to clear, but with decent gear and potions, you should be able to manage at levels below 20. To start the quest, you will need to travel to Sundercliff Watch and begin the Mehrunes’ Razor questline. You’ll need to progress the quest to the point where you can obtain the Beating Heart from Msirae Faythung. Eating the heart will inflict you with two status effects, Cannibal’s Prion and Porphyric Hemophilia. If you do not wish to keep the Cannibal’s Prion status, you will need to wait three days for Vampirism to take hold before using Cure Disease to dispel it. Otherwise, you will lose both.

The third and final option for contracting the disease will be by fighting vampires themselves. These enemies can be found through various quests and throughout the world. An example is the Thieves Guild questline. When seeking the boots of Springheel Jack, there will be vampires towards the end of the quest when you find the boots. The curse will ignore your resistances, and when you take damage from a vampire, you’ll always have a chance of being afflicted with the curse. Allowing a vampire to hit you repeatedly will give you a better chance of becoming a vampire.

How to Cure Vampirism

Finding a cure isn’t as easy as you may expect.

When you have initially contracted Porphyric Hemophilia, you still have the option to eat ingredients to cure it, as well as cast spells and drink potions to cure diseases. The only caveat is that this has to happen within the in-game 72-hour window of contracting it. Afterward, you must obtain the Cure Vampirism potion through a fairly long quest. The cure for Vampirism quest can be started by speaking with Vicente Valtieri once you have become a full-fledged vampire. Here you will be directed to Raminus Polus and begin your quest towards becoming cured. This quest can be found at the Arcane University and given to you by the NPC named Raminus Polus.

Once you have been cured, there is no going back to becoming a vampire. You can still contract the disease, but you will only gain the stat debuffs from the point you’ve been cured, and at that point, it will act like any other disease received in the game. You can cure it by normal means and dispel it as you progress. If you are playing on PC and wish to become a vampire again, you can still do so via console commands and cure it with console commands. Using the console commands “Set PCVampire to 0” and “Set vampire.hasdisease to 0” will allow you to reset the game to thinking you’ve never had the disease in the first place.

Becoming a vampire in Oblivion Remastered is a big decision, as it limits what you can do during the day. You can still fast-travel if you abuse the loading screen system. Hitting your menu keys to open the map or inventory as you load into the world will prevent any damage you are about to take from the sun. Though this method will require precise timing, it does allow you to travel during the day and not receive any damage either. You gain new Vampire abilities at the cost of having to feed on sleeping NPCs to keep your condition at bay and no longer being able to safely travel during the day. It is a gameplay style that won’t suit everyone, but it does allow for a new and unique way to play through a classic game.
