Uncover the Necromancer Conspiracy: A Guide to Oblivion's "Ulterior Motives" Quest

This chapter of the Mages' Guild questline in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered delves deeper into the necromancer threat in Tamriel. Following the mage staff guardians' demise, your quest for knowledge takes on a deeply personal tone.

With the final mage staff in your possession, you're tasked with a seemingly simple mission: retrieving a book. However, this seemingly innocuous errand leads you straight into a dangerous conspiracy.

Accessing the "Ulterior Motives" Quest

To begin this quest, you must:

• Complete all Mages' Guild Recommendation quests.
• Complete the Mages' Staff quest.
• Speak with Raminus Polus about your Journeyman advancement.

Once a Journeyman mage, speak to Raminus about available tasks. He'll assign you the retrieval of a book from the Count of Skingrad.

Retrieving the Book from Janus Hassildor

Travel to Skingrad and speak with Mercator Hosidus, usually found in the County Hall at Skingrad Castle.

He'll instruct you to wait until the following day to speak with the Count. Wait 24 hours and speak to Mercator again.

Mercator will arrange a meeting with the Count at 2 AM outside the Cursed Mine. Note: the meeting point, though described as north of the mine, is actually west (slightly southwest), between the mine and the Grateful Pass Stables.
