So, you’ve chosen to play Oblivion Remastered as a Marksman. You’ve made the right choice.

It’s become a meme at this point to start a new Elder Scrolls save with all these grand plans about making a unique character with an interesting backstory, only to fall back into playing a Wood Elf Stealth Archer for the twelfth time.

But the best Marksman Builds are beloved for a reason. They let you slip into a space undetected before clearing the whole dungeon without ever raising the alarm. They’re powerful, they’re sneaky and allow you to play the role of a gentleman thief or dashing rogue with aplomb.

While Stealth Marksman might not be as overpowered in Oblivion as it is in Skyrim, sneaking around dungeons undetected firing off critical hits with as much as 3x bonus damage is still incredibly strong.

However, because character creation works differently in Oblivion Remastered and there’s not actually a lot of choice when it comes to bows, creating an effective Marksman Build can be trickier than you think.

• Bosmer (Wood Elf)
• Khajiit

The best starting Race for a Marksman Build in Oblivion Remastered is easily Bosmer. As a Wood Elf, you receive big bonuses to many of your key Skills, including Marksman, Sneak, Light Armor and Acrobatics. You also get massive boosts to the key Attributes Agility and Speed.

Alternatively, if you want to try something a bit different, albeit less powerful out of the gate, you could also choose Khajiit for their Agility, Acrobatics and Sneak bonuses.

Argonians can also make good archers thanks to their Agility, Speed and Athletics boosts. When playing as an Argonian, you also get the minor bonus of being able to breathe underwater, which helps you to escape from tricky situations where you’re being chased by guards since they can’t follow you underwater.

When creating your custom class, I like to choose Agility first-and-foremost because it governs you two main Skills: Marksman and Sneak. Security isn’t strictly necessary, but everyone likes loot in RPGs and as a stealthy character it makes thematic sense to be able to open locked doors and chests.

Then I find Speed useful for general exploration, but also because it governs Acrobatics, Athletics and Light Armor - all key stats for archers.

Then for your Skills, you just need to mirror your picks for Attributes. Marksman and Sneak are non-negotiable, whereas Security is a nice-to-have for general play.

Acrobatics and Athletics make you light, nimble, easy to maneuver and fast enough to reposition once caught. To this end, Light Armor is really the only equipment type which makes sense, plus it’s the easiest type to get an early Marksman Fortify enchantment with.

Finally, you have a flex slot which you can either use to turn your build into a melee/range or magic/range hybrid, or give you the ability to self-heal with magic.

If you think you’ll miss shots and need to quickly switch to a sword often, then choose Blade. If you like the sound of shooting fireballs and lightning alongside arrows, choose Destruction. Otherwise, Restoration spells are incredibly useful and stop you from chugging health potions like water during a marathon.

To equip your build, I recommend joining the Dark Brotherhood as soon as possible. This is because you’re immediately given their signature garb, the Shrouded Armor. This pitch-black armor set is not only a solid set of Light Armor to protect your squishy body, but comes ready-equipped with a Fortify Marksman enchantment.

Oblivion Remastered Best Bows

Compared to the best melee weapons in Oblivion Remastered, there are relatively few unique bows. It’s lucky then that because of the huge damage boost given to undetected hits, most of the regular bows you find throughout the game will suffice.

If you can get your hands on a Steel Bow, then you can’t go far wrong for most of the early game. However, there are still a few special weapons you can seek out once you’re ready for an upgrade.

Shadowhunt

Since you’ve already started the Dark Brotherhood questline to get the Shrouded Armor, it’s just the icing on the cake that you also get one of the best bows in Oblivion Remastered, Shadowhunt, from that faction as well.

After completing the fifth faction quest after the introduction, you receive Shadowhunt if you manage to complete the quest undetected - so it’s highly recommended to make a save before attempting the hit to make sure you get the bow.

Shadowhunt is relatively simple, it’s a decent Steel Bow which deals extra damage to Health and Magicka, making it useful for dealing with mages. It also debuffs enemies with a weakness to poison, should you like to follow-up your ranged attacks with a poisoned dagger.

Frostwyrm Bow

For more base damage, and a nice frost damage enchantment, you can trek all the way up to Dive Rock in the far northeast of Cyrodiil.

At the location marker you find an abandoned camp and a journal warning of an abominable snowman in the area. Follow the line of the cliff edge east, then when the mountain dips downwards turn southeast.

Here you’ll find the Uderfrykte Matron, a unique troll with an icy, shimmering appearance.

They have a huge health bar, but you can exploit the mountainous terrain and trolls’ weakness to fire damage to your advantage. Even with no investment in destruction, you can hop up onto a nearby boulder where the Matron can’t reach you, then spam fireballs until they’re defeated - it’ll just take a few minutes is all.

Once they’re down, you can grab the Frostwyrn Bow from their body, which should come with both a base damage boost and a frost damage enchantment. Remember you can recharge enchanted weapons like this with filled Soul Gems.

Hatred’s Soul

Finally, the highest base damage bow comes from the flames of Oblivion itself.

But Hatred’s Soul doesn’t just have high base damage, but an extra Fire Damage enchantment paired with a Drain Speed effect to make targets easier to hit.

You get it by exploring the Embers of Hatred inside the Oblivion Gate that spawns outside the city of Chorrol in the northeast corner of the map.

It’s not a unique item though. Apparently Oblivion Gates can spawn a selection of 7 different dungeons. Hatred’s Soul can always be found in what’s known as “Random Oblivion World 2” in the community.

To reach Hatred’s Soul you need to turn right as you enter the Oblivion Gate, jump over the lava flow in front of you, then follow the narrow path until you reach a minefield. On the other side, there’s a hidden door off the edge where the path ends.

This leads to a cave which leads to the Embers of Hatred. Inside you need to defeat two keymasters before opening the doors to claim your prize. I’ve embedded a classic visual guide from Mythic Dwellers above since it can be tricky to find.
