Weekly Platform News: Impact of Third-Party Code, Passive Mixed Content, Countries with the Slowest Connections

This week's web performance and security updates highlight the increasing importance of efficient code and secure connections. Lighthouse, Chrome's auditing tool, now flags excessive third-party code impact, while passive mixed content is nearing its end. Additionally, global internet connectivity disparities remain a significant factor.

Lighthouse Tightens Third-Party Code Performance Standards

Lighthouse now issues a warning, escalating to a failure, when third-party scripts excessively impede page load performance. Specifically, if third-party code blocks the main thread for over 250ms, the "Third-party usage" audit will fail. This improvement is available in Lighthouse version 5.3.0 (Chrome Canary).

Passive Mixed Content: The Countdown Begins

Browsers currently tolerate insecure resources (HTTP) within secure (HTTPS) pages—known as passive mixed content. This poses significant security and privacy risks. However, Chrome will soon automatically upgrade all passive mixed content to HTTPS, blocking resources that fail to load securely. Currently, approximately 30% of image loads fail this auto-upgrade in Chrome Beta. This change is scheduled for February.
