Console game prices are soaring, but it's not the hardware, it's the software that's breaking the bank. With individual game prices nearing $100, the affordability of mobile gaming is increasingly appealing.
Mobile Gaming: A Budget-Friendly Option
The mobile app market quickly established a price ceiling for upfront game purchases. The result? Most mobile games are remarkably inexpensive. I expect to pay under $10, often less than $20, for a full mobile game—well within impulse-buy territory.
I'll bypass the free-to-play debate, focusing instead on the numerous premium titles available for purchase. These offer exceptional value; I can often acquire ten mobile games for the price of a single Switch 2 title.
Mobile Ports: Surprisingly Cheaper
The low cost of mobile games isn't due to inferior quality. Cross-platform ports consistently demonstrate this. Morphite, for example, costs $8 on the Play Store but $15 on the Nintendo eShop. Stardew Valley is $5 on the Play Store and $15 on the PlayStation Store. Dead Cells is $9 on the Play Store versus $25 on the Xbox Store.
While these are indie ports, the cost savings are undeniable. These three games would cost $60 on consoles (excluding sales), but less than $20 on mobile. And with Samsung DeX, I enjoy the added benefit of playing on a larger screen.

4 Subscription Services: Family-Friendly and Affordable
The high cost of a Switch 2, coupled with my children's gaming habits, prompted a reevaluation. Google Play Pass and Apple Arcade offer incredible value for families.

It's no Apple Arcade, but Play Pass is still a good way to game on the cheap.
For $30 a year, Play Pass grants access to numerous high-quality mobile games, eliminating in-app purchases and ads—making games previously off-limits to my children now perfectly acceptable.
Netflix Games: A Hidden Gem
A Netflix subscription unlocks a surprisingly robust library of mobile games. Netflix's game selection has improved significantly, featuring titles like Monument Valley 3, Hades, and Sonic Mania Plus. I've discovered hidden gems like Kentucky Route Zero and Oxenfree, games I'd recommend buying on other platforms, but readily available through my existing Netflix subscription.

2 Cloud Gaming: Leveraging PC Game Sales
PC games also offer significant cost savings compared to consoles, thanks to frequent Steam sales and Humble Bundle deals. NVIDIA GeForce NOW allows me to access my Steam library on my phone, regardless of PC ownership. I purchase games at the lowest price and stream them, rarely missing out on AAA experiences (excluding Nintendo titles).

While game development costs are rising, my budget remains fixed. Mobile gaming allows my family to continue enjoying games without incurring excessive expenses, avoiding the difficult conversation about expensive console titles.
