Upgrading the GitLab version on Debian system can follow the steps below:

Method 1: Use the upgrade script provided by GitLab

  1. Backup data Before you make any upgrades, make sure you back up all your GitLab's important data, including repositories, configuration files, and databases.

  2. Download the latest version of GitLab and visit the official GitLab website to find the latest version suitable for your system, and download the corresponding installation package.

  3. Stop GitLab service

     sudo gitlab-ctl stop unicorn
    sudo gitlab-ctl stop sidekiq

  4. Remove the old version of GitLab

     sudo apt-get purge gitlab-ce gitlab-ce-cli gitlab-rails gitlab-shell postgresql-9.6
    sudo rm -rf /var/opt/gitlab
    sudo rm -rf /etc/gitlab

  5. Install the new version of GitLab using the corresponding package manager for installation based on the downloaded installation package type (.deb or .rpm). For example, if you downloaded the .deb package:

     sudo dpkg -i gitlab-ce_<version>_ce.deb
    </version>

    Then run:

     sudo apt-get install -f

  6. Reconfigure GitLab

     sudo gitlab-ctl reconfigure

  7. Start GitLab service

     sudo gitlab-ctl start

  8. Verify Upgrade Open your browser, access your GitLab instance, check whether it is running normally, and check the version information to confirm that the upgrade is successful.

Method 2: Use Docker container to upgrade

If you are running GitLab through a Docker container, you can upgrade by following the steps below:

  1. Backup data Use Docker volumes or bind mounts to back up GitLab's data directory.

  2. Pull the latest version of GitLab image

     docker pull gitlab/gitlab-ce:latest

  3. Stop and delete old GitLab containers

     docker stop gitlab
    docker rm gitlab

  4. Running a new GitLab container Restart the GitLab container using the previously backed up data directory. For example:

     docker run --detach \
      --hostname gitlab.example.com \
      --publish 443:443 --publish 80:80 --publish 22:22 \
      --name gitlab \
      --restart always \
      --volume /srv/gitlab/config:/etc/gitlab \
      --volume /srv/gitlab/logs:/var/log/gitlab \
      --volume /srv/gitlab/data:/var/opt/gitlab \
      gitlab/gitlab-ce:latest

  5. Verify Upgrade Open your browser, access your GitLab instance, check whether it is running normally, and check the version information to confirm that the upgrade is successful.

Things to note

  • During the upgrade process, make sure the system time and time zone are set correctly.
  • If you are using a self-signed certificate, reconfigure the SSL certificate after upgrading.
  • After the upgrade is completed, it is recommended to run sudo gitlab-rake gitlab:check SANITIZE=true to check the health of GitLab.

Through the above steps, you should be able to successfully upgrade the GitLab version on your Debian system. If you encounter problems during the upgrade process, please refer to the official GitLab documentation or seek community support.
