The Chess Puzzle is one of the trickier challenges in Blue Prince. It’s part scavenger hunt, part memory test, and completely randomized with every run. To complete it, you’ll need to identify which rooms had chess pieces during your run, remember where those rooms were placed, and then replicate that layout on the puzzle board.

There are six pieces total: Pawn, Rook, Knight, Bishop, Queen, and King. The challenge lies in the fact that room placements change every day, and the game only registers the piece if the corresponding room was placed that day.

Where to Find the Chess Puzzle

You can access the puzzle in the Underground section of the manor through one of two methods:

• Blue Flame Route: After activating all four Blue Flames around the grounds, an elevator opens a tunnel to the puzzle chamber.

• Fountain Route: Drain the fountain in front of the manor, then find and light the altar near the tunnel to reveal stairs leading to the same area.

How the Puzzle Works

When you enter a room with a chess piece, that piece becomes "active" for the day. Once you reach the Chess Puzzle, the game checks where those rooms were located on your manor grid. Your job is to place each chess piece in the correct corresponding square, based on where you drafted the room with that piece.

You can move pieces around the board, so a bit of trial and error is allowed. Just remember: only one piece per type is needed, even if you placed several of the same.

You can draw floor plans four times when drafting in corner rooms.

Piety of the Bishop
No more chapel taxes. Instead, you gain +30 gold the first time you enter the Chapel each day.

Mantle of the Knight
Adds the Armory to your draft pool. The Armory includes:

• Knight’s Shield (negates red room penalties)

• Self-Igniting Torch (lights candles and fuses)

• Axe (removes gem cost from any room)

Gambit of the Queen
Lose five steps and gain a key every time you draft in the west wing.

Banner of the King
Choose a room color each day. Rooms of that color are more likely to appear.

To change your power later, you’ll need to solve the Chess Puzzle again from scratch.

Best Chess Puzzle Power

Mantle of the Knight is widely considered the best pick. The Armory is too good to pass up—especially the Axe, which lets you permanently remove gem costs from a room in your directory.
