How to add a listener in Oracle?

In an Oracle database, a listener is a background process that listens for connection requests from clients and directs them to the appropriate database instance. To add a listener, follow these steps:

1. Create a listener configuration file

Create a text file containing the listener configuration parameters. The file's extension must be .ora . The file contents are similar to the following example:

LISTENER = ( DESCRIPTION = ( ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = hostname)(PORT = 1521) ) ) SID_LIST = ( SID_DESC = ( SID_NAME = ORCL ORACLE_HOME = /u01/app/oracle/product/12.2.0.1/dbhome_1 ) )

in:

 • ADDRESS specifies the IP address and port to which the listener listener listens.
 • SID_DESC specifies the name of the database instance to be associated with the listener and the Oracle home directory.

2. Save the monitor configuration file

Save the listener configuration file in the following location:

$ORACLE_HOME/network/admin/listener.ora

where $ORACLE_HOME is the Oracle home directory.

3. Start the listener

Start the listener with the following command:

lsnrctl start LISTENER

Where LISTENER is the name of the listener.

4. Verify the listener

Use the following command to verify that the listener is running:

lsnrctl status LISTENER

If the listener is running, you will see an output similar to the following:

LSNRCTL for Linux: Version 12.2.0.1.0 - Production on Wed Jun 29 14:47:14 2023 Copyright (c) 1991, 2018, Oracle. All rights reserved. Connecting to (DESCRIPTION=(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=tcp)(HOST=hostname)(PORT=1521))) STATUS of the LISTENER ------------------------ Alias LISTENER Version 12.2.0.1.0 Start Date 29-JUN-2023 14:47:14 Uptime 0 days 0 hr. 0 min. 0 sec Trace Level off Security ON: Local OS Authentication SNMP OFF

Additional Notes:

 • You can create multiple listeners to listen for different IP addresses or ports at the same time.
 • Additional configuration parameters such as log level and connection timeout can be specified in the listener configuration file.
 • If you are having problems adding a listener, see the Oracle documentation or contact Oracle Support.
