New York Times Connections game tips and answers (Wednesday, April 9)

Author: Kris Holt

Today is Wednesday, which means it's time to play Connections again!

I personally think the start of this season's "White Lotus" is not ideal, and some of the plots are not attractive. But I think the second half of the season is much better.

Last Sunday’s finale put a perfect end to the season, with the theme of this season finally falling on spirituality and morality. Overall, I don't think it's as good as the first two seasons, but there's still a lot of compelling plots. I'm already looking forward to season 4.

Before we started, I set up a discussion group on Discord for discussion of the New York Times Connections game and my column articles. We built a great little community there and we talked about much more than the New York Times games. Everyone who joined was friendly and it was a relaxing and enjoyable gathering place.

This is also the best way to give me any feedback about columns, especially in the rare case where I make mistakes (!) because I don't read much of a comment or tweet.

Here are the tips and answers for the New York Times Connections game today (Wednesday, April 9).

How to play Connections game

Connections is a free, popular New York Times daily word game. A new puzzle is released every night. You can play on the New York Times website or on the gaming app.

The game will present you with a grid of 16 words. Your task is to arrange them into four four-character groups by finding out the connections between them. These groups can be such as items you can click on, the name of the study participant, or words that start with a body part, etc.

There is only one solution for each puzzle, and you need to be careful when dealing with words that may fall into multiple categories. You can disrupt the order of words to better find out the connection between them.

Each group is color-coded. The yellow group is usually the easiest to find, the blue and green groups are in the middle, and the purple group is usually the hardest. Purple groups usually involve word games.

Select the four words you think are put together and press Submit. If you guess wrong, you will lose a life. If you are close to the correct group, you may see a message telling you that you are only one word away from the correct answer, but you still need to find out which word needs to be exchanged.

If you make four mistakes, the game is over. Let's make sure this doesn't happen with the help of some tips, and if you really struggle to resolve it, you can also refer to today's Connections answer. Like Wordle and other similar games, it's easy to share results with your friends on social media and group chats.

If you have a New York Times All Access or Games subscription, you can access the Connections game archive for the publication. This includes all previous Connections games, so you can go back and play any game you missed.

Apart from the initial 60 games or so, if you need a prompt, you should be able to find my prompt via Google! Just click here and add the game date you need to your search query.

What are the prompts for today’s Connections game?

Scroll slowly! After the prompts for each Connections group, I reveal what those groups are, without telling you immediately which words belong to them.

Today's 16 words are...

  • DOG (Dog)
  • POP (Bang)
  • BALL (Ball)
  • SOCK (socks)
  • SLUG (slug)
  • FROG (Frog)
  • GLOVE (gloves)
  • TROT (Trot)
  • BAT (Bat)
  • HOUND (Hunting Dog)
  • GLOBE (Globe)
  • POUND (pounds)
  • ORB (sphere)
  • NEWT (Salpaw)
  • HOLE (hole)
  • SPHERE (Sphere)

Today's Connections group prompts are as follows:

  • Yellow group – similar to beads or balloons
  • Green group - bang, hit
  • Blue Group - Double, double the labor and trouble; boil the fire, the pot boils
  • Purple Group – Here is a clever, perhaps fantastic connection

What is the answer to Connections today?

Spoiler warning! Don't scroll down the page until you're ready to view today's Connections answers.

This is your last warning!

Today's Connections answer is...

  • Yellow Group - Circular Three-dimensional Objects (BALL, GLOBE, ORB, SPHERE)
  • Green group - punching (POP, POUND, SLUG, SOCK)
  • Blue Group - Animals in Witch Potion in Macbeth (BAT, DOG, FROG, NEWT)
  • Purple Group - Fox... (GLOVE, HOLE, HOUND, TROT)

Aside from one mistake, I could have achieved perfect results, and this is my 43rd straight win. Despite this, I will accept this result. Here are my results:

???? ???? ????? ???????????

Although I suspect they might be a smoke bomb, I intuitively think that BALL, GLOVE, SLUG and BAT will have some connection. But that's not the case. I suddenly lost confidence in my intuition. Maybe this requires an intuitive check.

Anyway, it's obvious that SLUGs have to be grouped with green, although there are FROGs and NEWTs on the grid. There are so many slimy creatures today. That said, I vaguely feel that FROG, NEWT and BAT are usually part of the witch potion. However, I decided to consider this later.

I turned my attention to the yellow group and solved the problem. On the shrinking grid, my eyes make a connection between HOUND and HOLE. I realized they were related to "Fox" and got the purple group.

Regarding the concept of the Witch Cauldron, my blue group is correct, but the specific content of the reference is incorrect. I won't put DOG and the rest together.

That's all about today's Connections clues and answers. If you need tips and solutions to Thursday’s game, be sure to check out my blog tomorrow.
