Google is phasing out Google Assistant, replacing it with Gemini later this year. This change will affect a wide range of devices, including smartphones, tablets, cars, and phone-connected devices like headphones, smartwatches, and some smart TVs.
This isn't entirely unexpected. Google's earlier announcement regarding Bard (Gemini's initial name) hinted at integrating Bard's capabilities into Google Assistant. The subsequent removal of numerous Google Assistant features in early 2024 further foreshadowed this transition.
Google's official statement clarifies the rollout: "Over the coming months, we're upgrading more users on mobile devices from Google Assistant to Gemini; and later this year, the classic Google Assistant will no longer be accessible on most mobile devices or available for new downloads on mobile app stores." The upgrade will also extend to tablets, cars, and connected devices. A new Gemini-powered experience is planned for home devices such as speakers, displays, and TVs.
However, Google specifies that devices running Android 9 or earlier, and those with less than 2GB of RAM, will be excluded from the Gemini upgrade. Supported devices include:
- Android phones (including many foldables) with 2GB RAM or more, running Android 10 and higher.
- Android tablets (including Pixel Tablet) with 2GB RAM or more, running Android 10 and higher.
Significance: While the eventual demise of Google Assistant isn't shocking, the timing might surprise some. This transition underscores Gemini's pivotal role in Google's future strategy, likely extending its influence across Android and Google Search.
