As U.S. Senators Alex Padilla and Peter Welch formally requested AI chatbot sites Character.ai and Replika.com to provide information on their security measures, demand for Google's children's Gemini updates grew, according to CNN , they wrote:

“We write to express our concerns about the risks posed by character- and person-based AI chatbots and companion apps to the mental health and safety of young users.”

Their request came after Character.aI was scrutinized by parents who believed their children were seriously hurt after using chatbots, CNN said.

As a universal AI assistant, Google's Gemini falls into different categories with products like Character.ai and Replica, which aim to mimic personalized, human-like characters and companions. However, as both adults and children are exposed to more and more AI-generated information, this information puts the responsibility on users and requires them to conduct due diligence verification - a capability that children do not have, so ensuring children's safety remains crucial.
