I'm a huge fan of pixel art beat 'em ups, a genre I've enjoyed since the NES, Sega Genesis, and SNES eras. Games like Double Dragon, Streets of Rage, Golden Axe, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles hold a special place in my gaming history. The recent resurgence of the genre is incredibly exciting!
Marvel Cosmic Invasion offers a roster of 15 heroes, allowing players to form tag teams and switch between characters mid-battle—a feature reminiscent of Marvel vs. Capcom. The game will support four-player local and online co-op with full cross-platform play.
Interestingly, this isn't Marvel's first foray into pixel art beat 'em ups. In the early 90s, Data East created an arcade game, Captain America and the Avengers, featuring a limited playable roster. This title was later ported to the Sega Genesis and SNES (I own a Genesis copy!).
The classic franchises I mentioned earlier are experiencing a remarkable revival. Double Dragon recently received a new installment, with another on the horizon. Streets of Rage 4 was a huge success, and Sega is rebooting Golden Axe. Furthermore, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge, developed by Tribute Games and published by Dotemu (the same team behind Marvel Cosmic Invasion), was a critically acclaimed pixel art beat 'em up.
The current selection of beat 'em ups is fantastic, and it's only getting better. The side-scrolling beat 'em up is back in a big way! Marvel Cosmic Invasion is slated for release later this year.
