Web Components Efficient delivery and processing of complex data
This article explores best practices for safely passing complex data in Web Components, such as arrays containing multiple objects. Suppose we have one<order-tree></order-tree>
Components need to receive the following complex data structures:
let data = [{id:1,name:'1'},{id:2,name:'2'},{id:1,name:'3'},...];
Passing JavaScript objects directly as attributes is not an ideal solution, because the Web Components property can only receive strings. Therefore, we need to serialize the data into a string and pass it. JSON stringification is a common method.
In the parent component, we convert data
object to a JSON string and assign the value to<order-tree></order-tree>
data
properties of the component:
let data = [{id:1,name:'1'},{id:2,name:'2'},{id:1,name:'3'}]; let jsonString = JSON.stringify(data); document.querySelector('order-tree').data = jsonString;
exist<order-tree></order-tree>
Inside the component, get the JSON string through this.data
and parse it back into a JavaScript object using JSON.parse()
method:
class OrderTree extends HTMLElement { constructor() { super(); this.attachShadow({ mode: 'open' }); } connectedCallback() { try { let data = JSON.parse(this.data); // Now data is a JavaScript object, and console.log(data) can be used normally; // ... Use data ... } catch (error) { console.error('JSON parsing failed:', error); // Handle JSON parsing errors, such as displaying error messages or using default data} } get data() { return this.getAttribute('data'); } set data(value) { this.setAttribute('data', value); } } customElements.define('order-tree', OrderTree);
This method ensures that complex data is safe and efficiently passed to Web Components and parsed. Remember to add an error handling mechanism inside the component to deal with JSON.parse()
failures, such as displaying error messages or using default data.
