Google announces three new web performance metrics, collectively known as Core Web Vitals:
- LCP (Largest Contentful Paint): Maximum Contentful Paint
- FID (First Input Delay): First Input Delay
- CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift): Cumulative Layout Offset
These indicators are measurable. Although these metrics are not included in Lighthouse, such as the Review tab of Chrome DevTools, it will be added soon. Currently, you can use open source libraries to get these values, and there are also some browser extensions (but it is still in its early stages and requires manual installation).
These new metrics focus more on the actual user experience, which can directly reflect web page performance compared to previous optimization methods that simply reduce requests and reduce resource size.
More importantly, Google made it clear that Core Web Vitals will directly affect SEO rankings:
We are further improving this work and previewing upcoming search ranking adjustments in advance, which will be included in these page experience metrics. We will introduce a new signal that combines Core Web Vitals with our existing page experience signals to give a comprehensive understanding of the quality of users’ experience on the web page.
In short, these metrics will directly affect (or soon) your SEO ranking.

As part of this update, we will also include page experience metrics in the ranking criteria for the mobile search for "Hot Story" function, and cancel the requirements for "Hot Story" qualification for AMP.
This means that AMP will no longer be a necessary condition for the “Hot Story” feature, and that is the main driver of AMP penetration. I'm looking forward to seeing my first non-AMP page appear there! I know some features will not be available, such as swiping between stories (as this depends on Google AMP cache, etc.), but that doesn't matter, let's wait and see. Make AMP something people use out of their own will, not something they are forced to use.
