Last week at Adepticon in Milwaukee, WI, Catalyst Game Labs unveiled Battletech: Gothic, a new boxed set featuring redesigned miniatures and battle maps. This release offers a darker, alternate interpretation of the Battletech universe's history.

This grimmer vision depicts humanity's relentless warfare escalating to devastating consequences. Major factions clash over dwindling resources on ravaged planets, while simultaneously battling grotesque abominations—twisted hybrids of flesh and steel—for control of the battlefield.

Herbert A. Beas II, the author of the Battletech: Gothic setting, explained his inspiration: "As a long-time sci-fi fan, I've always been drawn to the 'what if?' possibilities inherent in these universes. Battletech, with its rich lore, provided the perfect canvas for exploring an alternate timeline. The success of alternate universes in other franchises, like Star Trek's Mirror Universe or Marvel's 'Nightmares of Futures Past,' showed the potential for compelling new narratives while enhancing appreciation for the original timelines. My work on Empires Aflame (2014) fueled my desire to delve deeper into alternative Battletech histories. When Catalyst proposed a boxed set exploring this concept, I couldn't resist!"

Battletech: Gothic is the inaugural release in the Continuum series, which will feature various alternate Battletech timelines and aesthetics. While each set will be self-contained, the components will be compatible with existing Battletech products, allowing players to incorporate the unique new mech designs. The set includes record sheets for A Game of Armored Combat and cards for Alpha Strike.

Randall N. Bills, Catalyst Game Labs' Creative Director, shared his perspective: "Having worked on Battletech for three decades, from game design and art direction to novel writing and lore coordination, Battletech: Gothic presented a unique opportunity. It's the first official alternate setting for a game I've loved for forty years. Collaborating with Marco Mazzoni on the stunning artwork, Herb Beas on the dark universe's creation, Ray Arrastia to maintain narrative consistency, and our manufacturer Liya to elevate the miniatures' quality—it was incredibly challenging and rewarding. We're already developing the next Continuum game, Rockets & Rayguns, a tribute to classic science fiction."

Battletech: Gothic is slated for release in Summer 2025.

It is slower than original scripts like HTML2FPDF and produces larger files when using Unicode fonts, but supports CSS styles etc. and has a lot of enhancements. Supports almost all languages, including RTL (Arabic and Hebrew) and CJK (Chinese, Japanese and Korean). Supports nested block-level elements (such as P, DIV),
