Understanding dopamine loops and manipulative app designs felt overwhelming. The key is recognizing that these apps are deliberately designed to hijack our brain chemistry, keeping us hooked.
But this isn't hopeless. I've cut my screen time by 75% in two months, primarily using my phone for texting. My usage dropped from 6-7 hours to 1-2 hours. I've rediscovered the joy of reading, finishing two books last month.
My Strategy for Reducing Screen Time
My approach involved two key strategies: modifying my phone's design and changing my relationship with the device.
1. Dumbing Down My Smartphone:
- Removing App Icons: I switched to a minimalist launcher (OLauncher on Android, but any text-based launcher works) replacing colorful icons with text. This limited the apps visible on my home screen, forcing me to prioritize essentials (messaging, notes, ebooks, payments) and excluding social media. A notepad widget proved useful for quick note-taking.
- Deleting Apps: I ruthlessly deleted non-essential apps (social media, YouTube, games) and disabled pre-installed apps where possible. The key was resisting the urge to reinstall.
