The Signal Redirector is a high-tech tool in Atomfall that lets you hack junction boxes remotely, disabling turrets or powering electric locks. You'll see it referenced a lot throughout the game, as there are boxes that it can be used on as early as Bunker L8, the place where you first awaken within the Zone.
On your first playthrough, it's likely to be a long time before you get your hands on the Signal Redirector, as it's in the deepest level of one of the game's most secure areas. If you think you're ready, here's what you need to do in order to get it.
If you'd rather not become the Protocol's number one target, you can also get a Signal Redirector by finding the Windfall Shipment. However, this will prevent you from seeing Doctor Garrow's storyline, which can in turn affect the plotlines of other key characters.
How To Reach Skethermoor Prison
The Signal Redirector is at the bottom level of Skethermoor Prison, which is itself defended by Protocol soldiers outside and in. The prison is on the southern edge of the Skethermoor map, past the main Protocol camp. Specifically, its coordinates are 41.1E, 70.8N
It's best to approach the prison from the east or west, so that you don't have to fight your way through the camp and its dozens of soldiers; in the worst case, you can just take some Painkillers for the damage reduction buff and sprint for the prison entrance.
You can reach Skethermoor fairly early by traveling through the Slate Mines in the southeast corner of Slatten Dale, but this route isn't recommended; it's guarded by robots who can make short work of you if you aren't extremely careful. It's much better to enter Skethermoor through Wyndham Village and take the long road south, even though soldiers at the village checkpoint will try to stop you.
The door to the prison itself is guarded by a machine gun turret. There's not much you can do about it until you come back out with the Signal Redirector, so wait for it to recalibrate and reload then make a break for the door.
Before You Go
Before attempting to enter the prison, it's a good idea to prepare:
- Buy the Firearms Skill Manual from Bootsy, who has a black market operation on the second floor of the barn at 36.4E, 76.0N in Skethermoor. These Skills will make your gunplay much more effective.
- Buy the Crafting Skill Manual from Morris in Wyndham, and learn Gunsmithing to upgrade guns. This will be useful both before your attempt on the prison, as you can get better-quality gear, and during your raid, as you'll be able to combine military-grade guns like the Peerless SMG into higher-tier versions as you loot them off of defeated soldiers.
- Make sure you have your maximum capacity of ammunition, as well as crafting materials for key supplies like Bandages. Painkillers and Combat Stims, if you can get them, are also a good idea.
How To Find Doctor Garrow
If you've been asking around, particularly with Nora in her barn in northern Skethermoor, you've probably heard that the last known whereabouts of the Signal Redirector was in the possession of Doctor Garrow, who was imprisoned here by the Protocol. Your first objective in the prison, therefore, is to find her.
Holding Cells
The first big challenge is the holding cells. The three-level structure means that any guards who see you can shoot across at you, so it's best to keep quiet and take them out one by one if you can. Once all the guards are dead, use their assault rifles to shoot the robot from above; emptying a clip into the glass dome on its head and the components beneath should cause it to overheat, giving you time to run down and pull out its battery.
How To Find The Security Keycard
From the bottom level of the holding cells, go through the security checkpoint to reach the guard barracks. Explore the area as much as you like, and when you're ready take the left-hand hallway to the Mess Hall.
You can use the food here to heal up after any fights with guards you encounter.
Go through the kitchen and down the back stairs to find a vent that leads to the Maintenance Room. Follow the signs marked A-04 (but watch out for the guard with the Stun Stick on the other side of the first door) until you see a double door on your left. Beyond it is a guard armed with an SMG and the Security Keycard on the table next to him. Take it and keep making your way to A-04
How To Reach Doctor Garrow
Use the Security Keycard to open the locked doors leading to the Prison Yard. Make your way down to the rear storage area, which has become a makeshift holding area. Like the prison entrance, the door is guarded by a turret, so time your approach carefully.
Keep guns at the ready, too - there are still guards all the way to Garrow's cell!
Where Is The Signal Redirector?
Garrow is in the center cell in the holding area. Talk to her, and she'll tell you that the Signal Redirector is in the nearby security room.
Go back toward the door that you entered by; the security room is to the right. The Signal Redirector is on a shelf at the rear right.
How To Use The Signal Redirector
Like the Metal Detector, the Signal Redirector will alert you when a hackable Junction Box is nearby. They're usually connected by bright yellow cables to a nearby generator, so if you find either you can follow the circuit to the box.
All you have to do to switch a Junction Box is point the Signal Redirector at it an press the fire button. Usually this will transfer power from one electric lock to another, allowing you to open it, or disable a nearby turret, rendering it harmless.
It's a good idea to return to Bunkers that you've previously visited, including the very first one, with the Signal Redirector to open up areas that were previously inaccessible.
Freeing The Prisoners
Once you have the Signal Redirector, there's nothing stopping you from leaving Doctor Garrow and the other prisoners to their fates. However, freeing them will cause chaos for the Protocol, making it easier for you to get away.
If you want to free the prisoners, go to the rear of the storage area and climb through the vent. Use the Signal Redirector on the Junction Box there to unlock the door on the left, then go through and pull the lever at the top of the stairs. This will free all the prisoners in Skethermoor, causing you to be labeled a rogue agent by the Protocol. From that point on, you will no longer be welcome in Wyndham Village, though you can still fight your way to buildings there if you have business that needs to be seen to.
The prisoners will loot guns from the guards you defeated on your way in and fight any who are still alive, then make for the exit. Garrow, meanwhile, will escape to the Interchange and seal the door behind her; you'll need to follow her in by another exit to catch up with her.
When you leave the prison, a small squad of armed prisoners will spawn to help you fight your way clear of the area. The first thing you should do is enter the security room on the right and use the Signal Redirector to disable the turret, or they'll be gunned down before they can be of any real help.
The prisoners will try to fight every Protocol soldier they see during their escape, and will eventually be overwhelmed. Don't try to help them; instead, use the chaos to sneak away (possibly stealing the Armory Key from the building directly across from the prison first) and plan your next move.
