The Samsung S Pen, a Wacom-powered digital stylus debuting on the original Galaxy Note in 2011, now resides in every Galaxy S Ultra. However, I believe its ideal home is the Galaxy Z Fold series – a line of phones that doesn't even include it in the box.
My experience with the Z Fold 5 and now the 6, spanning over a year, solidified my appreciation for the S Pen. This isn't solely due to the stylus itself, but rather the phone's unique form factor.
The Galaxy Z Fold: A Notebook in Your Pocket
The Galaxy Z Fold, a book-style foldable phone, transforms from a standard phone to a tablet-sized device upon unfolding. This design is key to its appeal.

Foldables aren't just for productivity enthusiasts.
Now in its sixth generation, the Z Fold has always been S Pen compatible, though never bundled with one. It's incompatible with the S Pens included with the Galaxy S Ultra or Tab; a separate Fold Edition S Pen is required (though the removal of Bluetooth from the S25 Ultra's S Pen minimizes the difference).
##### Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6
8/10 $2020 $2320 Save $300 The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 seamlessly blends tablet functionality with smartphone portability. Its large internal display offers a seamless transition from the cover screen.
$2020 at Amazon $1900 at Samsung See at Best Buy My previous experience with a stylus-equipped Moto G Stylus 5G was underwhelming. The Z Fold 5, however, changed my perspective. The stylus feels so natural on this larger screen that I believe Samsung should have rebranded the Z Fold as the new Galaxy Note or even Galaxy Notebook (though "Galaxy Book" is already used for their laptops).
For those concerned about the Z Fold 6's price, consider this: foldable phones depreciate quickly. Buying used or open-box can significantly reduce the cost, making it comparable to a new Pixel 9 Pro or iPhone 16 Plus.
A Larger Canvas for Writing
The Z Fold's expansive inner screen provides a far superior writing surface compared to the S Ultra or my old Moto G Stylus. It's like upgrading from sticky notes to a full-sized journal.
I now regularly write pages on my Z Fold 6, finding it even more comfortable than my Moleskine. The screen size is similar, but the phone's width and weight distribution make one-handed writing effortless. This has reignited my daily journaling and creative writing habits.
It's worth noting the S Pen doesn't work with the cover display. However, given the large inner screen, I don't miss this functionality.
A More Comfortable S Pen
The S Pen for the Note and S Ultra series, designed to fit inside the phone, offers convenience at the cost of comfort for extended use. It's suitable for short notes, but not ideal for lengthy writing sessions.
The Fold Edition S Pen comes in various sizes. While I found the slim version lacking, the larger, pre-Z Fold 5 version, similar in size to a standard pen, is perfect for my Z Fold 6.
I always carry it, albeit in a phone sleeve with an added pouch from Etsy (pictured below my old Z Fold 5).
Digital Note-Taking: A Winning Combination
Digital note-taking has become a preference. The ability to easily erase, rearrange text, and highlight makes it superior to pen and paper.
Samsung Notes, arguably Samsung's best app, seamlessly integrates handwritten and typed notes. Its transcription feature is surprisingly accurate, especially with print.

Digital surpasses paper in many ways.
The biggest advantage? My "notebook" and "pen" are always with me. The Galaxy Z Fold has finally made my goal of consistent note-taking a reality.
The S Pen, combined with Samsung DeX, makes the Z Fold my preferred foldable. Within a year, it's become a primary way I use my phone.
The physical size and feel of a device significantly impact the digital experience. The Galaxy S25 Ultra might be cheaper and boast better specs, but for writing, the Z Fold is the clear winner.
