Improve Civilization 7 Game Experience: A Guide to Urban Specialization
In Civilization 7, establishing new settlements is one of the best ways to expand civilization. There are two types of settlements: towns and cities. Towns and cities have different mechanisms and benefits. A town can designate a town specialization, but understanding the advantages of each specialization and which specialization can be difficult. Town specialization is very useful in some cases, so let's take a closer look at all town specializations and how to use them effectively.
The towns in "Civilization 7" are settlements that can be developed into cities. Towns cannot use productivity to create improvements; instead, they can use gold for any construction. Towns can still expand their territory and build and improve based on the new population, but will convert all the productivity of the plot into gold for civilization.
What is urban specialization?
Urban specialization is a way to improve urban production (such as food, happiness, productivity, etc.). When a town is first established, it will be classified as a developmental town, which will increase the growth of town by 50%. But once the town reaches a population of seven, you can change the town specialization.
You can only change the town specialization once per era, so please think carefully about your choice.
In every era, all cities except the capital will be transformed back into towns. However, changing the capital will retain the previous capital as a city. New Town Specialties will be unlocked in different eras, so you should check your town at the beginning of the era, especially if you have many towns. Here are all the town specialties and benefits from Civilization 7:
Town Specialty | describe | Unlocking the Era |
Development-oriented towns | Increase town growth by 50%. | Ancient |
Fortress Town | 5 Force Healing and 25 Wall Health. | Ancient |
City Center | 1 Culture and science. | Ancient |
Agricultural towns | 1/2/3 Farms, pastures, plantations and fishing boats. | Ancient |
Mining town | 1/2/3 Productivity of camps, logging yards, clay pits, mines and quarries. | Ancient |
Trade outpost | 2 Happiness for each resource plot in this town and 5 trade route range. | Ancient |
Religious Holy Land | 2 Happiness and 1 The cultural relic slots of the temple in this town. | explore |
Hub towns | 2 The power value of each settlement connected to this town. | explore |
Factory town | Buy 100% of the gold from the factory in this town. 1 Resource slot. It must be built in towns with improved factory resources. | modern |
Which town specialties to choose
The town specialization you choose will depend on the plot, times, situations of the town, and even the civilization and leaders you are in. You can only change the town specialization once per era, so you should wait until the town grows and then switch to the specialization.
When you make progress in the ancient times, it is best to keep your specialty as a developmental town until you expand. Your town territory can be expanded beyond three plots, so it is best to wait until your territory grows to a certain level before switching to town specialization. Once you get to this point, you can evaluate plot yields and improvements in towns to help determine which type of town specialization is best for it. For example, if most of your improvements are farms, ranches, or fishing boats, switching to an agricultural town will greatly increase food yields.
As you enter the age of exploration, there are some great town specialties to choose from. If you are pursuing cultural victory, a religious sacred site may be a good choice, or establishing a trade center will ensure you can expand your trade routes and maximize your resources. If you are fighting other civilizations, it can be very helpful to designate the town closest to its border as a fortress town.
As you enter the modern era, factory towns are a great choice for town specialization as it complements your entire civilization with resource allocation. You will find that owning towns can increase gold resources, especially in the later eras, and adding factory town specialization will make purchasing costs less. Cultural civilization can benefit a lot from it. However, this is still great for any civilization, depending on what resources are available.
Overall, it is best to keep your town as a developmental town until it expands several plots and has improvements or resources that can help civilization. While upgrading towns to cities is also a good idea, it is better to keep some of the larger cities and have several towns that can increase the supply of gold and share food with the city later.
