Ironically, Fizbin, the studio that developed two anti-system games, Say No! More and Reignbreaker, was shut down by the parent company two weeks before its latest game was released.
Fizbin Studio, known for its ridicule of company absurdity, is now facing a realistic version of the company absurdity drama. Its parent company Thunderful is laying off employees and is gradually abandoning internal game development. Unfortunately, Fizbin Studios were also not spared, and despite their proposed new projects, they ultimately failed to obtain approval, only their final work, Reignbreaker, was able to continue.
According to Alexander Pieper, founder of Fizbin Studios, the layoffs are part of Thunderful's decision to "significantly cut internal development" at the end of 2024. Since then, the team has been working hard to find new jobs, but ultimately has to accept the fate of being shut down.
“This means Reignbreaker will be the final work of Fizbin Studios.”
It's a bittersweet release.
If you like the idea of throwing spears at the Tyrant Queen, you might want to give Reignbreaker a try. This is a fast-paced Roguelike action game with fast combat, upgrade choices, and rebellion themes inspired by…real life authoritarianism and class struggle.
One developer even called it a response to the “rise of right-wing authoritarianism, the growing class gap and exploitation.”
It also looks very similar to Hades – something critics quickly pointed out.
Still, if you want to support the team's final work, the game will be released on March 18, and now there is a trial version on Steam.
Prior to the production of Reignbreaker, Fizbin Studios launched popular indie games such as:
The final game was described as "short, but extremely satisfying" - which is ironic because the ending of their game development career was the same.
Currently, Fizbin Studio will focus on releasing Reignbreaker and provide support after the game is launched, while helping team members find new jobs. It's not the ending they want, but at least they ended the journey with a game that fits their rebellious spirit.
If anything else, it is the case that sometimes capitalism unplugs without waiting for the end credits to roll.
