Anchor Positioning Quirks

The CSS-Tricks Almanac now boasts comprehensive coverage of the new Anchor Positioning API, detailing each property, function, and at-rule. My recent deep dive into this module revealed some intriguing quirks and potential bugs, which I'll explore here to save you some head-scratching.

The Inset-Modified Containing Block (IMCB)

While the containing block for static elements is straightforward (the parent's content area), absolutely positioned elements introduce complexity. Their containing block is typically the viewport or the nearest positioned ancestor. However, the inset-modified containing block (IMCB) adds a layer of nuance, particularly relevant to anchor positioning.

The IMCB is defined in the spec as the containing block effectively shrunk by the inset properties (top, right, bottom, left) of the absolutely positioned element.

For instance:

.absolute {
  position: absolute;
  top: 80px;
  right: 120px;
  bottom: 180px;
  left: 90px;
}

Here, the IMCB is smaller than the viewport, reduced by the specified inset values. Understanding the IMCB is crucial for mastering anchor positioning, especially the position-area and position-try-order properties. position-area divides the containing block into a grid, and the IMCB defines the positioning area within that grid. position-try-order uses IMCB dimensions to determine fallback positioning. Una Kravets' visual tool at https://www.php.cn/link/7e77e4a1b051ec0a510b48eaec2f3a3c provides excellent visualization.

Specification vs. Implementation: A Tale of Rapid Evolution

While the spec served as a valuable guide, real-world browser implementation revealed discrepancies. The rapid development and deployment of anchor positioning (first draft June 2023, Chrome 125 release) led to some initial inconsistencies between the spec and browser behavior. Changes made after initial browser implementation include:

  • inset-area renamed to position-area: inset-area is deprecated, use position-area.
  • position-try-options renamed to position-try-fallbacks: Use position-try-fallbacks.
  • inset-area() function removed: The wrapper function is no longer needed for position-try-fallbacks.
  • anchor(center) simplification: A more concise syntax for centering is now available.
  • Bugs: Several bugs exist, particularly concerning position-area behavior when a default anchor is absent and position-visibility default behavior.

Accessibility Considerations

While anchor positioning excels for tooltips and popovers, using it for purely decorative purposes (e.g., connecting elements with lines) can hinder accessibility. Screen readers may not understand the relationship between visually linked but semantically unrelated elements. Using ARIA attributes like aria-describedby and role is recommended to establish a clear semantic relationship, ensuring accessibility for assistive technologies.

Conclusion

Mastering anchor positioning requires navigating its complexities. While the CSS-Tricks Almanac provides valuable resources, remember that the API is still evolving, promising further learning opportunities and potential future refinements.
