Firefox 136 and Thunderbird 136: Enhanced Security and Performance

The latest releases of Firefox and Thunderbird bring significant improvements in video playback smoothness, browsing security, and overall user experience. Let's delve into the key updates.

Thunderbird 136: Subtle but Significant Enhancements

While Thunderbird 136 doesn't boast groundbreaking new features, it offers several valuable refinements, especially for users transitioning from the Extended Support Release (ESR) branch. The dark reader in the message pane has received a boost, with improved dark mode compatibility. A convenient toggle in the header allows users to disable dark mode if needed.

This update also introduces a setting to customize message threading and sorting order. Crucially, numerous bug fixes address issues related to attachments, email folders, IMAP account notifications, and security vulnerabilities.

The Path to a More Frequently Updated Thunderbird

Mozilla is actively encouraging users to switch from the ESR branch to the Stable release channel, which receives monthly updates with new features and bug fixes. This shift aims to increase the daily active user base on the Stable channel significantly. While in-app notifications will promote the transition, users on the ESR channel won't be automatically migrated.

System Requirements and Migration

Thunderbird 136 maintains the same system requirements as Thunderbird 128 (ESR), supporting Windows 10 or later, macOS 10.15 or later, and desktop Linux with GTK 3.14 or higher. Windows 7 and 8 users should note that the last update for those systems was Thunderbird 115.

Migrating from ESR to Stable is straightforward for Windows and Mac users; simply download the latest Stable version and install it to the same directory as the ESR version. Linux users, however, may find the process more complex and might prefer to wait for a simplified Flatpak or Snap update.
