New Ikea smart home device will work with any Thread hub

According to the latest FCC regulatory documents, IKEA plans to launch a temperature and humidity sensor called Timmerflotte, which will support the Matter-over-Thread connection standard. This means that unlike previous smart home products that rely on Wi-Fi or Zigbee protocols and owned hubs, this new sensor works with any Matter-compatible smart home hub, including HomeKit without the IKEA hub.

While IKEA has released HomeKit-compatible sensors since 2018, its smart home products rely mainly on Wi-Fi or Zigbee protocols to communicate with its own hubs. According to HomeKit News, IKEA plans to use the Matter-over-Thread protocol to communicate with its own Dirigera hub in its new sensor. The hub was updated on September 11, 2024 to support Matter and includes a Thread-enabled radio module.

This sensor, called Timmerflotte, will be compatible with existing Apple or third-party Matter controller devices, and will no longer need to purchase an IKEA hub for families already using other Matter-over-Thread hubs. The Timmerflotte sensor is powered by two AA batteries and is about the size of a typical smoke alarm.

The device is expected to be approved soon by FCC, but there is currently no specific information on the time of launch of Timmerflotte.
