According to The Block, Ethereum has raised the Gas cap for the first time under the Proof of Stake (PoS) mechanism, which has received support from more than half of validators and significantly improved transaction processing capabilities.

Gas cap is a key parameter that determines the number of transactions per block on Ethereum. The cap has remained at 30 million for four years, and now it has exceeded 31 million, meaning a single block can handle more transactions or more complex smart contracts.

This adjustment was not achieved through hard fork, but was accomplished using Ethereum's built-in governance mechanism. Once more than 50% of validators vote for it, the system will automatically adjust the Gas cap. According to reports, the adjustment was completed yesterday.

Ethereum last adjusted its Gas cap in 2021, when the cap doubled directly from 15 million to 30 million.

gaslimit.pics data shows that the average Gas cap on Ethereum has reached 31.5 million in the past 24 hours, and is expected to gradually increase to 36 million in the future.

Although Ethereum has improved scalability through Dencun upgrades and Proto-Danksharding, further increasing the Gas cap remains necessary as DeFi applications and on-chain transaction volumes grow.
