Xiaomi at MWC 2025: A Modular Phone Revolutionizing Mobile Photography
Xiaomi unveiled a groundbreaking modular phone concept at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2025, designed to empower photography enthusiasts. This innovative device, featuring a magnetic attachment system akin to MagSafe, centers around its Xiaomi Modular Optical System (MOS).
The MOS, reminiscent of the Samsung Galaxy Camera but modernized, currently exists as a concept. However, given Xiaomi's track record, its transition to a commercial product remains a possibility. The phone's rear magnetic ring isn't for cases or charging; it's for attaching a modular optical camera lens system.
This modular system utilizes a custom camera module containing the sensor, lens, and internal components for effortless operation. Simply attach a lens, open the camera app, select the rear lens, and capture professional-quality photos and videos. No pairing, charging, or data transfer is needed; the MOS handles everything seamlessly.
The showcased lens boasts a 100-megapixel Micro Four Thirds (M4/3) sensor and a 35mm f/1.4 all-aspherical glass lens. Xiaomi has engineered a reduction in the traditional lens's size and weight, making it ideal for a compact smartphone. A physical focus ring and built-in precision autofocus are included. While only one lens was demonstrated, additional options are likely if the concept reaches production.
Xiaomi highlights the MOS as pushing the boundaries of optical engineering, aiming to refine mobile photography. Images are saved directly to the phone's internal storage, eliminating the need for SD cards and dongles. The high-speed data transfer is achieved through Xiaomi's proprietary LaserLink communication technology, a 10Gbps optical connection using lasers. This ensures near real-time data transfer for immediate editing and sharing.
On-device software and large-scale models handle image processing, enhancing results and potentially enabling UltraRAW shooting with 16 stops of dynamic range. Initial images shown were impressive.
While Xiaomi hasn't committed to a market release, the company is open to the possibility and welcomes feedback from this concept demonstration.
