Upgrade to Windows 10: A Guide to Creators and Anniversary Updates
This guide outlines how to update your Windows 10 installation to the latest version, covering both the Creators Update and the (now outdated) Anniversary Update. For the most current version, focus on the Creators Update instructions.
Part 1: Installing the Windows 10 Creators Update
For older Windows 10 versions, the Windows 10 Update Assistant offers a faster upgrade path than Windows Update. Note: This tool doesn't support Enterprise or Education editions.
Visit the Windows 10 Update Assistant webpage and click "Update now."
The tool downloads and checks for the latest version, including the Creators Update. After downloading, run the tool and select "Update Now." Your PC will restart several times, so save your work beforehand. Your files and settings will be preserved.
Alternatively, the Media Creation Tool allows for a clean installation or reinstallation of Windows 10.
After the Creators Update, the WinX menu will display Settings instead of Control Panel, and Windows PowerShell will replace Command Prompt. You can restore the Control Panel and Command Prompt to the WinX menu if desired.
Anniversary Update (1607) vs. Creators Update (1703)
Part 2: Installing the Windows 10 Anniversary Update (Outdated)
Note: This section describes the Anniversary Update (1607), which is no longer the current version. Refer to Part 1 for the latest update.
The Anniversary Update was a major Windows 10 release with numerous improvements. These steps are outdated but provided for historical context.
Step 1: Open the Settings app and click "Updates & Security."
Step 2: In the Windows Update tab, click "Check for updates."
Step 3: If updates are available, click "Update" to begin the download and installation process.
This update improved Windows Ink Workspace, Microsoft Edge, File Server, and more, and enabled Microsoft Edge extensions via the Windows Store.
