Moving is hard. Let these apps do the heavy lifting.

Moving is a huge project that makes people feel troublesome. Research shows that moving brings even more anxiety than wedding preparations! Don't worry, we have carefully selected ten APPs to help you easily deal with every step of the moving process, from finding an ideal home to packing items to resettling your new home.

  1. Zillow: The best choice to find an ideal place to live

There are many real estate search apps on the market, but Zillow stands out with its high-quality interface and comprehensive listing information. It provides a simple and easy-to-use interface covering buying, selling and renting properties across the United States. The built-in budget calculator also helps you easily calculate affordable mortgages and rents.

You can enter an address or outline the area on the map to search for listings, and narrow down the scope by filtering conditions such as prices, nearby schools. Most of the properties come with a large number of photos and videos for you to check them out carefully. After finding your favorite house, you can contact the relevant real estate agent directly.

  1. Google Maps: Explore new communities and plan moving routes

Moving is indispensable for map APP, and it is not just used on the day of moving. Before moving, you can take advantage of Google Maps’ powerful search capabilities to explore potential new communities in advance.

You can search on the map where you may live and use the Explore tab to view local restaurants, parks, gyms, museums and other places. All of these venues come with user comments and photos. You can even use Street View to view your potential new home: hold on to the street and a small thumbnail will appear in the lower left corner; click on that thumbnail to access the 360-degree view of the area. It should be noted that some street view photos may be outdated – you can view the image date in the upper left corner.

  1. TaskRabbit: Seeking Moving Assistant

TaskRabbit platform connects you with local professionals hiring and provides services such as cleaning apartments, assembling furniture or handling heavy objects. You will most likely need the help of these three services during the moving process.

After opening the APP, select the task you need and set the time. TaskRabbit will provide a range of reviewed and evaluated "Taskers" for you to choose from. You can choose the right helper based on their charging price and qualification description. Prices can vary by location and task, but typically it takes about $35 per hour to hire one person to help with moving and packing.

  1. Craigslist: Buy and sell second-hand items to save moving costs

When you clean up your old residence, you may find something you don't need. Once you move to your new home, you may also find that you need some extra items. Location-based online marketplace Craigslist can help you with both tasks—handling old things and buying new things—without spending too much money.

Craigslist is not an app, but its website is available on mobile phones and tablets. Select your location, go to the “For Sale” section to publish information about your old items and browse new items. You can also look for helpers that can help you pack and move, but we think TaskRabbit is a better tool to hire helpers: it will audit Taskers, and Craigslist won't.

Before you start buying and selling, read Craigslist's security guide, which will help you avoid scams. Also, be careful: if you are meeting strangers, bring friends with you—don’t blindly trust anyone you meet online.

  1. Dolly: Ideal for carrying small items

Similar to TaskRabbit, Dolly allows you to hire local helpers to simplify the moving process. However, the services it offers are limited to booking “manpower” or “trucks and manpower” (if you don’t have a large vehicle of your own). Contractors working through Dolly are background checks, rated by users, and are covered by commercial insurance. After booking, they will appear at the time and place you specify.

Dolly's downside is that its service range is more limited than TaskRabbit (areas covering Chicago, Boston, and San Diego), so you should check if it is available in your city. Prices are also slightly higher: a short-distance transport for a large item starts at about $50, but the price will increase with the distance and quantity of items; you should use the app to get a more accurate quote. Finally, if you only need a small amount of help with small items, rather than whole house handling services, this option is the best option. For whole-house handling, you need to book a professional team through an app like Moved (see below for details).

  1. Evernote: Record moving lists and important information

Evernote appears on many "Best...APPs" lists because it's very versatile: This app saves all your notes from writing a speech to planning a move. It stores text, images, links, notes and other details that you can easily organize and search for.

For example, you can use Evernote to save a list of houses you are interested in, a list of tasks you need to complete, and an archive of important documents. If other members of your family use the app, you can share all these notes with them. To access more features, including additional cloud storage, you can upgrade to a paid account of $8 per month.

  1. Sortly: Track packaged items

You need to make sure everything is delivered to your new home safely. Sortly provides an intuitive system that allows you to track all the items you pack. With this app, you can take photos of each item; mark it, such as which room it comes from or which room it needs to be placed in; and then add any additional instructions you want to add. Once you arrive at your new home, compare the contents of the box to your digital list to make sure everything has arrived.

Sortly is free - as long as you catalog no more than 100 items and rely only on one device. Otherwise, a $4 per month paid plan will give you unlimited inventory and allow you to access the app on up to three devices. The paid plan also allows you to print out a QR code that you can attach to the box. After scanning the QR code, Sortly will tell you what is in the box.

  1. Moved: One-stop moving service reservation platform

Moved makes it easier for you to find and book moving services. The app will first ask you some key questions, such as when and where you move. It will then connect you with a human assistant. Through text chat, this assistant will help you plan the process and book your moving companies, decor companies, storage unit companies and other services.

The app itself is free, as Moved makes money by commissions from moving companies and other vendors you contact. Currently, only iPhone users can download the app, but Android users can access the service through their website.

  1. Moving Checklist: Moving Checklist and Countdown

Part of the pressure of moving comes from having to remember hundreds of different things on the to-do list. Moving Checklist can relieve some of the stress. It counts down to your moving date and suggests tasks based on the distance of the date. This gives you a clear view of what you need to do a month, week, or day ago.

Like Moved, this app can also help you contact companies that may provide useful services, from packaging label suppliers to the U.S. Postal Service’s address change website. Some of these services are local businesses, and the app makes money from these sources. This makes it free for you.

  1. Fantastical: efficiently plan your moving schedule

Before moving, be sure to make a calendar to plan everything. Although your phone comes with a calendar app, we recommend you upgrade to Fantastical. It offers many useful features, including reminders that can be launched at a specific time or location, an easy-to-understand agenda screen (clearly displaying even the most complex calendar), and support for natural language commands such as “Picking the Moving Truck at 2pm.”

The disadvantage is that at least for now Fantastical is only available for iOS devices. And you also need to pay – although the price is only a one-time fee of $5.
