Reddit's new exploration feature: a convenient way to discover interesting communities!

Discover interesting Reddit communities with this handy new feature

Reddit mobile users may have noticed a compass icon on the bottom bar of the app - that is Reddit's first new feature in the past two years: Discover Tab. It is designed to help users more easily explore Reddit's growing community population, which is very simple to use.

Explore how Tab works

The above compass icon is located between the home button of the App and the plus icon for creating the post (the web version is not available). Click on it and you'll see a series of pictures and video posts that Reddit thinks you'll like based on the community you join or the one you spend a lot of time browsing.

Jason Costa, Director of Reddit Content and Community Products, said in a statement: "We are opening a new era of Reddit discovery, and images and videos are our top priorities. We are making the discovery relevant content and community more intuitive. .”

It is also a way to show potentially interesting posts in front of users who may have turned off various recommended settings (click on your profile icon, then click on Settings , and view them with your username) . So, even if you have disabled Reddit's ability to slide recommended posts into your homepage feed and tell it not to use your IP address or interact with partner websites and apps to recommend content, Exploring Tab still works fine.

How to explore using Reddit Tab

Unfiltered Exploration Tab is a scrollable collection of suggestions posts with a subreddit name displayed at the top of each post. Click on a post and it will take you to the community where you can scroll to see if you want to join. If you want to join, click the blue "Join" icon (depending on where you are on the page) to join.

Now, if you want your exploration Tab to be like your favorite selfies – filtered – check out the top of the screen. Below the search box and profile icons and the main menu icon, you will see the topic suggestions displayed in bubbles – scroll right to see more. Click on a theme to convert a more general feed into a feed specifically for the topic you click on, and then scroll down to see if anything is interesting to you.

You can continue to use these filters, but you end up reaching the end, as the app seems to show only 25 at a time. This is OK: Swipe down from the top of the screen to refresh the entire Explore Tab.

How to improve and explore Tab

Feedback is very important, whether you are a website with a market capitalization of over $10 billion or a 7-year-old graffitiing of the worst self-portrait that a teacher has ever seen. This is why Reddit has built-in response mechanisms in Exploring Tab so you can tell them whether their recommendations are good or bad.

To find them, hold down any items in the feed to open a menu with the following options:

- Show more similar posts. Select this option and Reddit will thank you for your feedback. You will see more projects like this in the future.
  • Show fewer similar posts. Here are two possibilities: being able to see fewer specific posts or fewer communities that contain it. Whichever you choose, Reddit blurs it in your exploration Tab feed as you scroll, and you won't be able to click on it.
  • Report. This will open a report form for you to tell Reddit that a post violates the rules of subreddit, constitutes harassment, is spreading error messages, or falls into many other unpleasant categories.
• Share. Clicking this option will display a menu of various sharing options, including the ability to span to another subreddit and copy direct links.
  • Save. This couldn't be more clear: this will save the post. You can click on your profile icon later and click Save to find it.
  • Share to chat. Use this feature to place posts directly into chats with other Reddit users.

If you've seen this, we naturally recommend subreddits focusing on the three pillars of Popular Science coverage: Reddit Science, /r/Technology and DIY.
