How to avoid seeing yourself on video calls

If you would rather face tens of thousands of hungry mosquitoes in the Florida Everglades than see your face on video calls, the “must-open camera” rule is enough to make you anxious. Of course, some people like to look in the eyes when others speak, but you are not like that.

Luckily, most major video calling platforms offer the ability to remove your own video feed from the view while keeping it visibility to everyone else in the call. Some platforms, such as Microsoft Teams, plan to add this feature soon.

How to remove your video feed in Google Meet

For anyone looking to wipe their face off the screen, Google's conferencing app offers an easy removal process. When you are on a call, hover over your video window to display three icons – one of which is the Remove tile button (four squares with slashes). Click it to send your video feed to the bottom right corner of the screen. Then click the minimization icon (two oblique arrows pointing to each other) to narrow it further. To restore it, click the maximization icon (arrows point in the direction away from each other) and click the Add tile button to put yourself back among other attendees. However, if you are using the mobile Meet app, you cannot do this.

How to Remove Your Video Feed in Zoom

Zoom is everywhere, but you may not want your face to be as ubiquitous as well. To quickly remove your video tiles from sight, hover over them and click the three dots that appear to display the options menu. Then select Hide your own view. To get yourself back, click the View button in the upper right corner of the window (it may also contain an icon that looks like a clapper), and click to show your own view . On the mobile app, swipe left to the bottom to enter the gallery view, then click More, Meeting Settings and turn off Show My Video in the gallery view 🎜>The switch next to it.

How to remove your video feed in Webex

When using Webex, you can break down the video into a free-floating window instead of viewing it as one of the on-screen tiles. To do this, click the Video Options menu (three dots) in your video tile and click to display my self-view in the floating window. This won't hide it, but if there are more than three people on the call, you can get rid of floating self-view by minimizing it. Simply click the Minimize My Self-View Video button (a square with an arrow pointing to the bottom right corner) and you're gone. To reappear yourself on the screen, maximize your self-view.

How to Remove Your Video Feed in FaceTime and Microsoft Teams

At the time of writing, neither Microsoft Teams nor FaceTime will let you stop viewing yourself if your video feed is turned on. However, Microsoft plans to update Teams later this month to add a feature — as TechRadar incisively describes — “ultimately letting you avoid your face.” It's not clear whether Apple has a similar plan for FaceTime, so if this is the app of your choice, you might have to face mosquitoes.
