Safeguarding your iPhone's apps, data, and settings is crucial. This guide details how to back up your iPhone using iCloud and your computer, both manually and automatically, ensuring a swift and easy restoration process should your device malfunction or get lost.

iCloud vs. Local Backup: A Comparison

Two primary backup methods exist: iCloud (cloud-based) and local backup (to your computer). Both offer advantages and disadvantages. A combined approach offers the most robust protection.

iCloud Backup:

  • Pros: Convenient, accessible from any device.
  • Cons: Limited free storage (5GB). Paid subscriptions are necessary for larger backups.

Included Data: App data, Apple Watch backups, device settings, messages (iMessage, SMS, MMS), photos, videos, purchase history, ringtones, and Visual Voicemail password (SIM card required).

Excluded Data: Data already synced to iCloud (Contacts, Calendars, etc.), data from other cloud services (Gmail), Apple Mail data, Apple Pay information, Face ID/Touch ID settings, iCloud Music Library, and App Store content.

Local Backup:

  • Pros: No storage limitations (dependent on computer hard drive space).
  • Cons: Vulnerable to computer failure or inaccessibility.

Included Data: Almost all phone data and settings.

Excluded Data: iTunes/App Store content, directly downloaded PDFs from Apple Books, content synced from Finder/iTunes, iCloud data, Face ID/Touch ID settings, Apple Pay information, Apple Mail data, Activity, Health, and Keychain data (unless password-protected).

It's recommended to use both iCloud and local backups for comprehensive protection. Use iCloud for on-the-go backups, and supplement with local backups when connected to your computer.

Manual vs. Automatic Backup:

Regardless of the method (iCloud, iTunes, or Finder), you can choose manual or automatic backups. Automatic backups occur when your iPhone is connected to power, using Wi-Fi or cellular data, and locked.

Password Protection:

Encrypting your backups with a password adds an extra layer of security and allows backing up data normally excluded (passwords, Wi-Fi settings, browsing history, health data, call history). iCloud backups are automatically encrypted. Local backups require a manually set password.

Backup Methods:

(Windows - iTunes)

  1. Connect your iPhone to your Windows PC via USB and open iTunes.
  2. Select your iPhone icon.
  3. Under "Backups," click "Back Up Now" for a manual backup.
  4. Select "This Computer" under "Automatically Back Up" for automatic backups.
  5. Check "Encrypt local backup" to encrypt your backup (requires password).
