Tired of free apps that don't quite meet your needs? Before you buy, explore ways to snag app discounts! Learn how to set up price-drop alerts directly on your phone.
Method 1: IFTTT Alerts (iOS Only)
IFTTT (If This Then That) lets you connect apps and services to create automated actions. This includes receiving alerts when app prices change.
Sign Up: Create a free IFTTT account. Then, create a "New Applet."
Set the Trigger: Choose "This" and select "Apple App Store." You may need to connect the services. Select "App price dropped" and enter the app's name or App Store URL (easily found via a web search).
Set the Action: Choose "That" and select your preferred alert method: SMS, Twitter DM, or Email. Email is recommended as IFTTT provides a template with key app details (name, developer, price change). Customize the template if needed.
Finish: Review your applet and choose whether to receive separate alerts for each price drop (email or push notifications if you have the IFTTT app).
Manage Applets: Repeat for multiple apps. Manage your applets on IFTTT's "My applets" page. You can manually check prices or delete unwanted applets.
Method 2: Price-Tracking Websites (iOS & Android)
For both iOS and Android, dedicated websites track app prices.
AppBrain (Android): Browse apps by category, etc., and filter by "Price Reduced." While it doesn't send alerts, it's great for finding unexpected bargains.
AppShopper (iOS): Similar to AppBrain but for iOS. It features a page of current discounts and allows you to create a wishlist and receive email alerts for price drops on your selected apps.
AppSales (Android): Find discounted and formerly-paid (now free) apps. They also curate a "favorites" list with sale alerts (available via their Android app for push notifications).
Bonus Tip: Social Media
Follow app developers on Facebook and Twitter for exclusive deals and sales announcements.
