Sharing your estimated time of arrival (ETA) while traveling is a thoughtful way to keep others informed and ease their worries. Whether you're using Google Maps or Apple Maps, sharing your ETA is simple and provides peace of mind for those waiting for you. This differs from general location sharing; this focuses on a specific trip's ETA with chosen contacts.

Google Maps ETA Sharing:

During navigation in Google Maps (walking, driving, or transit), tap the bottom card. Select "Share trip progress." You can then:

  1. Share directly with a Google contact; they receive an alert within Google Maps.
  2. Share via another app, sending a link to the Google Maps app.

The recipient sees your location as a trackable dot until arrival. To stop sharing, tap the bottom navigation card and select "Stop sharing." Android Auto users find this option by tapping the three dots on the ETA card, selecting "Share journey," and choosing a contact.

Apple Maps ETA Sharing:

In Apple Maps (walking, driving, biking, or transit), tap the "Share ETA" link. Choose a contact to share with. If the button disappears, tap the bottom arrow (next to the arrival time) to find it. iPhone users with iMessage receive an in-app link; others get a text ETA with updates.

Sharing ends upon arrival, but you can stop it early using the "Stop Sharing ETA" button at the bottom. CarPlay users find the same option, accessible at the trip's start or mid-journey via the details card arrow.

Alternative ETA Sharing Apps:

While Google and Apple Maps offer convenient ETA sharing, other apps provide broader location sharing (though not automatically ending with your trip):

  • ETA (iOS/Apple Watch only): This app simplifies ETA sharing via a message icon on the destination screen.
  • WhatsApp (Android/iOS): Share your live location for 15 minutes, an hour, or 8 hours via the paperclip (Android) or " " (iOS) icon, then "Location" and "Share live location."
  • Facebook Messenger (Android/iOS): Share your live location for 60 minutes. On Android, tap the four dots; on iOS, tap the " " icon, then "Location."

Choose the method that best suits your needs and the recipient's device. Remember to always be mindful of your privacy settings when sharing your location.
