How to break back into your locked accounts

This article has been updated. Originally published March 11, 2020.

We often access our online accounts without a second thought, relying on saved passwords and auto-login. However, losing access to crucial services can be incredibly disruptive. This might happen due to forgetting your password after a long period of inactivity, or, unfortunately, as a result of a security breach.
While hopefully you'll never face this situation, proactive preparation makes recovery significantly easier. Each account offers recovery methods; it’s vital to understand these steps and ensure your contact information is current.

This guide covers popular accounts, but remember to review the recovery options for all your important accounts. If an account isn't listed here, check its settings or search online for instructions.

Critically, remember that recovery methods are also exploitable by malicious actors. Therefore, your backup phone numbers and email addresses must be equally secure.

Reclaiming Your Google Account

On the Google account webpage, navigate to the Security section (usually found in the left-hand menu). Focus on the Account recovery options; these methods verify your identity if locked out.

This typically includes a recovery phone number, a recovery email address, and a security question. Update and verify this information. Google will send a verification link to your chosen contact method.

Accessing Your Apple Account

Visit your Apple ID webpage. On the left, six categories provide access to account details. Under Sign-In and Security, review the associated information, including two-factor authentication devices. The Devices section lists currently active devices. Use the blue edit icons to modify information.

For account recovery, prioritize the Account Security and Account Recovery sections (under Sign-In and Security). Keep these details accurate and up-to-date for password resets.

Recovering Your Microsoft Account

Access your Microsoft account webpage. Navigate to Security, then Advanced security options.

Add and verify a phone number and email address for account recovery. Microsoft will use these to verify your identity. Enable additional two-factor authentication methods like security keys or authenticator apps. Consider setting up passwordless access.

Unlocking Your Netflix Account

While less critical than other accounts, securing your Netflix account remains important. On the Netflix website, hover over your profile icon (top right) and select Account.

Ensure your account email and phone number are correct. Netflix will use these details to send password reset links. You may also be able to reset your password using your billing information.

Regaining Access to Instagram

Instagram uses your registered email and phone number for password resets. Access your Instagram profile on the web and click Edit Profile. Update your contact information. Instagram's password reset page allows you to use your username, phone number, or email to receive a reset link.

Unlocking Your Facebook Account

Facebook offers multiple recovery options. On the Facebook website, click the downward arrow (top right), then Settings & Privacy, and Settings. Go to the General tab and verify your contact information under Contact. Add multiple email addresses and phone numbers.

Under Security and Login, locate Setting Up Extra Security. Add trusted contacts who can verify your identity if locked out. Inform these friends about this setting.
