Incognito mode offers privacy benefits, although it's not foolproof. This feature temporarily suspends tracking of browsing and viewing history, preventing the saving of data like logins and personal information. Here's how to use incognito mode or similar features across popular apps:
YouTube:
On the YouTube mobile app, tap your profile picture (top right), then select "Turn on Incognito." To disable, tap the incognito button (top right) and choose "Turn off Incognito." For the web version, use your browser's private browsing mode. Note that ads may reappear for YouTube Premium subscribers in incognito mode.
Google Maps:
On the mobile app, tap your profile picture (top right), then select "Turn on Incognito mode." To exit, tap the incognito mode button (top right) and choose "Turn off Incognito mode." For the web version, use your browser's private browsing mode. Note that reviews, saved places, and location history won't be saved.
Spotify:
On mobile, go to Home, tap the cog icon, and under "Privacy," turn on "Private Session." On the desktop app, click the drop-down arrow (top right) to find the switch. Private sessions automatically end after 6 hours or when the app restarts.
Instagram:
Instagram lacks a true incognito mode, but you can hide your online activity. Tap your profile picture (bottom right), then the menu button (top right), followed by "Settings and Privacy." Select "Messages and story replies," then "Show activity status," and turn off the toggle. On the web, use the three-line menu, then "Settings," "How others can interact with you," and toggle off "Show activity status." Remember, this also prevents you from seeing others' activity status.
Using a private browsing window won't fully prevent Instagram from tracking your activity, but it will keep your browsing history private when accessing direct links.
Video Streaming Services (Netflix, Hulu, etc.):
No video streaming service offers incognito mode. However, you can usually manage your viewing history. For example, on Netflix (web), go to your profile picture (top right), then "Account," select your profile, open "Profile & Parental Controls," then "Viewing Activity." You can hide individual items or your entire history. Hulu allows removing items from your viewing history through a three-dot menu next to each item in the "Continue watching" section. Other services offer similar history management options.
