Waze: Personalize Your Navigation with Custom Voice Directions

Tired of the same old navigation voices? Waze, available on Android and iOS, lets you create and share custom voice directions, adding a fun and personal touch to your driving experience. This guide shows you how to record your own voice (or a friend's!) and manage your custom voice options.

Recording Your Custom Waze Voice

1. Access Waze Settings: Open Waze. Android users tap the three horizontal lines (top left), then Settings. iPhone users tap My Waze (bottom), followed by the cog icon (top left).

2. Navigate to Voice Settings: Select Voice and sound, then your current voice (likely "Waze voice"), and finally, Add a voice.

3. Record Your Phrases: After granting microphone permission, record the provided phrases. These range from simple greetings to turn-by-turn instructions. You don't need to complete everything at once; you can save your progress and return later. A timer helps ensure your recordings are concise. Use the blue play button to review and the trash can icon to delete and re-record.

4. Name and Save: Name your voice at the top of the screen. Save your progress when finished.

Managing and Sharing Your Custom Voices

1. Switching Voices: Your newly recorded voice will be set as the default. To change it, return to the Voice and sound settings. A blue checkmark indicates your active voice.

2. Waze's Voice Library: Waze offers a variety of pre-recorded voices, some including street name pronunciations. Custom voices, however, currently only cover basic directions.

3. Editing and Sharing: Next to each custom voice, a pen icon lets you edit recordings, and a share icon allows you to send your custom voice to other Waze users.

Using Your Custom Voice During Navigation

Once your preferred voice is selected, start navigation as usual. You can change the voice mid-trip by tapping the speaker icon near your ETA and choosing "Voice directions." Enjoy a more personalized and entertaining driving experience with your custom Waze voice!
