AirPlay speakers easily connect to various Apple devices, allowing you to enjoy music, podcasts or other audio content without any cable connection. The setting is simple and quick, and the audio feast is immediately opened.

What devices are compatible with AirPlay?

Using Apple AirPlay requires two devices: a sending device and a receiving device. AirPlay started with AirTunes in 2004, a feature that allows Mac computers running iTunes to broadcast audio to the AirPort Express Wi-Fi router. In 2010, AirPlay expanded to allow iOS devices such as iPhone, iPod, and iPad as sending devices as long as they run iOS 4.2 or higher. In 2018, AirPlay 2 was launched with iOS 11.4, improving AirPlay's buffering, multi-room capabilities and control capabilities across macOS and iOS devices. (The only Android device that can be used as an AirPlay sender is the 2016 HTC 10.)

Initially, only Apple devices could be used as AirPlay receivers. However, many companies now produce devices with AirPlay support, greatly expanding their choice. These include Naim, Bose, IKEA, Libratone, Harman Kardon, Yamaha, Philips, Marantz, Anbridge, Bowers & Wilkins, Cambridge Audio, Bluesound, KEF, JBL, Pioneer, Sony, Sonos, Macintosh, Dzogun, Bang & Olufsen and more. TV manufacturers have also joined, with Samsung, LG, Vizio, Roku and Sony all adding AirPlay 2 reception to their TVs. In short, if you prefer a brand in your audio chain, you can most likely continue to be loyal to that brand.

The types of products that support AirPlay are as wide as the brands that make them. For your home setup, you can find AirPlay-enabled speaker docks, AV receivers, soundbars, stereo systems, and surround sound systems. And, as mentioned above, more and more TVs also support AirPlay (not only streaming music, but also sharing videos and photos). Of course, using Apple HomePod as an AirPlay speaker is the most seamless experience. No matter how you like listening, there's a good chance you'll find an AirPlay-compatible device.

How to connect to AirPlay speakers

Once you have AirPlay-enabled devices, you can pair them and start listening.

  • First, make sure both devices are connected to the same Wi-Fi network. If your home or office offers multiple network options, select the one with the most stable connection.
  • Next, you need to enable AirPlay by opening Control Center. If you are using a mobile device, swipe up to enter the Control Center.
  • Then, click the AirPlay icon (Showing as a concentric circle with a triangle at the bottom). This will display a list of devices you can stream to. In the list of connected devices, you will notice other icons that let you know what type of content you can stream. For example, a rectangular icon will appear next to the Apple TV 4K, which means you can stream videos to the device. Devices that only display circles (such as speakers) support audio streaming only.

When you enable AirPlay and select the device you want to use, navigate to what you want to listen to, and just click Play. Your content should start streaming to the selected device so that you can enjoy music while cleaning or preparing dinner. Or, if your AirPlay sending device is already paired with the speaker, you can simply open any app you want to stream from (as long as it is compatible), you should already see the AirPlay indicator (word or icon, depending on app).

For users who frequently use AirPlay, you can set your iPhone or iPad to automatically connect to your preferred AirPlay connected device when nearby. To do this, go to Settings on your phone or iPad. Click “General”, then click “AirPlay and Relay”, and then click “Auto AirPlay”. You can choose Never to manually select the device every time, ask to receive suggested AirPlay connection notifications every time, or “Automatic” to discover and automatically connect to a commonly used AirPlay receiver.

How to connect AirPlay speakers

How to connect to multiple AirPlay speakers

If you have multiple speakers in your home and want to play the same music throughout your home, you are in luck. AirPlay 2 allows you to connect to multiple compatible devices at the same time (speakers, Apple TV, or even Apple computers running macOS Monterey or later), which means you can let your family hear your favorites no matter where you hide. song.

To play to multiple speakers or devices at the same time, call up the AirPlay settings in the Control Center. You should see the checkbox next to each device. Select the check box next to each device you want to play. You can also adjust the volume of each speaker if you want to make one louder than the others.

How to Control AirPlay Speakers with Apple TV

You can also connect and control AirPlay 2-compatible speakers using Apple TV. Press and hold the TV button on the Siri remote to open the Control Center, select the General Settings tab, and then select the Audio Control button. A list of devices will appear, arranged by room. Just like on your phone, you can adjust the volume of these devices directly on your Apple TV.

For home theater setups that use a home theater receiver or TV connection via an HDMI cable, you may need to calibrate the audio so that wired and wireless speakers can sync. To do this, go to Settings on your Apple TV and select Video and Audio. Then, select "Wireless Audio Sync" and follow the prompts on the screen.

AirPlay Troubleshooting

Unfortunately, technology doesn't always work immediately as we want it to be. If you have problems finding any of the above settings or connecting to a device that you are sure to be compatible with AirPlay, first make sure each device is updated to the latest firmware; the software will most likely solve most of the issues. You may also need to restart the device, as this will reset its Wi-Fi connection, which is required to use AirPlay. Finally, check again that all devices are connected to the same Wi-Fi connection. Then, you should be able to restart streaming your favorite crime podcast or hit songs.
