Destiny 2's Trials of Osiris: A Comprehensive Guide to the Revamped PvP Experience
Trials of Osiris in Destiny 2's Episode: Heresy has undergone a significant transformation. Gone is the all-or-nothing pressure of previous iterations; replaced by a rewarding win-streak system welcoming players of all skill levels. The rewards remain enticing, boasting exclusive weapons, cosmetics, and abundant upgrade materials.
This revamped Trials is significantly more player-friendly, retaining the core appeal of the pinnacle PvP activity while offering improved loot and a less punishing structure. This guide details what Trials of Osiris is, its mechanics, and why it's a must-play for virtually every Destiny 2 player.
Updated February 14, 2025, by Charles Burgar: This guide reflects the Episode: Heresy update, removing the flawless requirement for Lighthouse access. Information on flawless gameplay, Lighthouse access, rewards, and the new Passage system (including matchmaking and win streaks) has been updated.
Trials of Osiris is Destiny 2's premier PvP activity, a high-stakes 3v3 Elimination mode (Dominion variant). Available weekends only, it's a proving ground for PvP skills, offering highly sought-after weapons and armor.
Gameplay is tracked via a Passage purchased from Saint-14, acting as a win tracker and determining the matchmaking pool. Seven wins with a Lighthouse Passage grant access to the Lighthouse, a reward hub brimming with upgrade materials, Trials weapons, armor, and exclusive cosmetics.
Trials of Osiris begins every Friday at 10:00 AM Pacific (UTC -7 or 1700 UTC) and concludes at the weekly reset on Tuesday. Located in the Crucible tab of the Director, each fireteam member needs a Passage to participate.
Trials of Osiris is unavailable during:
Trials of Osiris provides unique weapons, armor sets, shaders, and cosmetics. Top-tier PvP weapons like Exalted Truth, Shayura's Wrath, and The Messenger are exclusive rewards. Most weapons are highly effective, with some even excelling in PvE.
PvE players benefit too, with powerful DPS weapons like Cataphract GL3 and Keen Thistle rivaling raid gear without requiring endgame PvE activities. Strong Crucible performance unlocks access to exceptional PvE weapons.
Participation requires:
Note that expansion ownership isn't cross-platform.
This quest, obtained from Saint-14 after completing the New Light onboarding, involves:
Step one requires completing weekly milestones for Powerful and Pinnacle Gear. Step two involves obtaining a Trials Passage and participating in a match. Completion unlocks Trials of Osiris and awards the Astral Horizon Shotgun.
Passages, sold by Saint-14, track Trials game history. Three are available:
Passage | Description | Matchmaking Pool |
---|---|---|
Trials of Osiris Passage | Low-stakes matches; no Lighthouse access. Awards reputation with bonus Trials rewards and bonus reputation for wins. | Skill-Based MM |
Lighthouse Passage | High-stakes matches; Lighthouse access after seven wins (consecutive or not). Rewards based on highest win streak. | Open MM (Not Completed) Skill-Based MM (Completed) |
Flawless Passage | High-stakes matches; Adept weapon drop chance on wins. Awarded after reaching the Lighthouse with seven consecutive wins. Cannot be | .Skill-Based MM |
The key differences are matchmaking pools (SBMM or Open Matchmaking) and Lighthouse eligibility. Passages can be reset to change matchmaking pools. The Trials Passage uses SBMM, while the Lighthouse Passage uses Open Matchmaking (until Lighthouse visit). A Flawless Passage is earned with seven consecutive wins and uses SBMM.
Unless completely new to PvP, the Lighthouse Passage is recommended. Open Matchmaking can provide strong teammates, and the guaranteed Lighthouse visit compensates for varying match difficulty. The Trials Passage is better for newer players or those needing warm-up games.
Trials of Osiris is a Dominion variant with a unique reputation system and loot pool. Matches are played on a single map, changing weekly. The Notswap modifier is active. Victory requires five round wins.
Matchmaking accommodates fireteam size (solo, duo, or trio). Wins grant Trials reputation and, with a Lighthouse Passage, track win streaks for Lighthouse rewards.
Rewards come from:
Trials Engrams are the primary reward, focusable for specific weapons and armor. Saint-14 also grants weapons and upgrade materials based on Trials Rank.
Trials Engrams function like Echo Engrams, decryptable for random loot or focusable (using 20,000 Glimmer) for specific items. Legacy Focusing (using five Engrams and 25,000 Glimmer) unlocks older Trials weapons and armor.
