To earn the badge, VPN apps must undergo a Mobile Application Security Assessment (MASA) Level 2 validation, proving their security claims. Additional criteria include a 90-day publication history on the Play Store, at least 10,000 installs, 250 reviews, and adherence to target API level requirements (currently Android 14). Developers also need an Organization-level account and must declare their app's data safety, including independent review details.

Several prominent VPN providers, including NordVPN, Aloha Browser, hide.me, Proton VPN, Secure VPN, and Thunder VPN, already display the badge. Google anticipates most reputable VPN developers will readily meet these requirements.

This initiative addresses concerns about insecure or malicious VPN apps on Google Play. The recent TikTok ban highlighted the surge in VPN downloads, emphasizing the need for user protection. The "Verified" badge provides users with clear visual confirmation of a VPN's independent security verification, ensuring safer online activity. The rollout is expected to begin immediately.
