I'm not a PC gamer, but I appreciate a great monitor. Gamers often get the best displays, so I was thrilled to see Samsung launch a 27-inch 4K OLED monitor, even if it's geared towards gamers.
While I value a high-quality display, physical size is paramount. My spouse and I share a large desk; they use a 32-inch Samsung Viewfinity. For consistency, I initially sought a matching monitor. However, a 32-inch felt excessively large for my workspace. A 27-inch monitor proved to be the perfect size.
At 27 inches, the screen is comfortably sized; I don't need to constantly swivel my head, yet it fills a significant portion of my visual field. It also saves valuable desk space.
The new Odyssey OLED G8 (G81SF) follows last year's 32-inch models. While ASUS and MSI also offer 27-inch OLED monitors (using Samsung panels), I'm focusing on Samsung's offering due to its familiarity and appeal.
The Odyssey boasts a 3840x2160 resolution powered by Samsung's fourth-generation QD-OLED technology. It includes an anti-glare coating, rear-core lighting with 52 color options, and a 0.03-millisecond response time—features shared by larger models. But the smaller size offers a unique advantage.
A 27-inch monitor surpasses its 32-inch counterpart in pixel density, resulting in sharper text. The Odyssey OLED G8 boasts a DPI of 160.
Previously, I considered ultra-high resolutions wasteful, especially on smaller devices. However, I've discovered the significant eye comfort benefits of high pixel density. My eye strain has dramatically reduced since using pixel-dense screens. The text clarity rivals that of printed material.
For TVs, I prefer larger screens at the same resolution. But for a monitor, where I sit much closer, the smaller size is superior.
My current 4K monitor uses LCD technology. I'd love an OLED panel. The image quality suffers when I use Samsung DeX with my phone docked to my monitor.
Samsung's new 27-inch 4K OLED monitor increases the likelihood of finding a similarly sized replacement with superior display technology and high refresh rates.
While I won't purchase this monitor immediately, I eagerly anticipate this technology's adoption in other 27-inch monitors. I plan to wait for a sale before upgrading.
