Android 15 enhances security with its new Identity Check feature, a significant addition to its existing Theft Protection suite. This feature adds an extra layer of protection against unauthorized access to sensitive device settings and accounts.

Identity Check requires biometric authentication (fingerprint or facial recognition) to perform actions like changing PINs, disabling theft protection, or accessing Passkeys when the device is outside pre-defined trusted locations (e.g., home, office, gym). This complements existing security measures.

The goal is to prevent unauthorized access even in situations where the phone might be left unattended and unlocked. This goes beyond typical theft protection, which primarily focuses on scenarios where the phone is forcibly stolen. Google aims to address a wider range of theft scenarios.

Furthermore, Google is expanding its theft detection lock feature to Android 10 and later versions. Collaboration with the GSMA and industry experts is underway to develop broader strategies for combating mobile theft, including sharing best practices and prevention techniques. A forthcoming GSMA white paper will detail these efforts.
