How Does ServiceStack Preserve Type Information During JSON Serialization and Deserialization?

JSON serialization and type preservation in ServiceStack

When serializing objects to JSON, it is critical to preserve type information in order to deserialize correctly. Consider the following example:

Here, serializing a Container object containing a Dog instance results in an InvalidCastException on deserialization because the deserialized Animal field is not explicitly recognized as a Dog. To solve this problem, ServiceStack adopts a mechanism to preserve type information.

The JsonSerializer in ServiceStack includes a __type attribute in the JSON payload to store type information. This property is emitted for interface, abstract class, and late-bound object types. For example, if Animal is defined as an interface or abstract class, the serialized JSON will contain a __type attribute with the value "Animal" or "Dog" respectively.

It is worth noting that using inheritance in DTOs is generally not recommended as it introduces unnecessary complexity. ServiceStack's default JSON serialization process is designed to produce self-describing DTOs without the need for external type information.
