Themberchaud, the Wyrmsmith of Gracklstugh, is a memorable red dragon in Dungeons & Dragons history, now a unique commander for a red "Mountains matter" deck thanks to Magic: The Gathering crossovers. This hefty reptile leads a dragon army, excelling in high-impact damage strategies. While lacking white's flicker protection, maintaining consistent triggers requires effort, but the payoff is substantial.
This powerful commander offers a fun, explosive gameplay experience. Its lack of evasion necessitates strategic maneuvering, but the rewards are well worth the challenge.

The Commander
In The Forgotten Realms, Themberchaud is a Gracklstugh forge-worker, rewarded with abundant treasure and food, leading to his flightless state. In Magic, he's a 5/5 legendary Dragon with trample, dealing damage equal to your Mountain count to non-flying creatures and players upon entering. His final ability grants him flying when exerted during an attack.
While a 5/5 with trample isn't exceptionally powerful in modern Commander, Themberchaud's massive damage potential is unique. Pair him with Mountains and flying allies, and you'll create a formidable mono-red deck.
How To Build The Deck
Themberchaud's strength lies in his "Mountains matter" ability. His high mana cost necessitates a strategy focused on maximizing Mountain count, which requires creativity given red's limited land ramp options. Leveraging synergy with other Dragons enhances the deck's effectiveness.
Ramp
Red often uses rituals for ramp, but this deck prioritizes land search. Burnished Hart fetches two Mountains, while Solemn Simulacrum provides land and card draw. Canoptek Wraith offers a similar effect to Burnished Hart. Equipment like Sword of the Animist and Bitterthorn, Nissa's Animus provide additional land fetching. Sword of Hearth and Home fetches a Mountain and flickers a creature, enabling multiple trigger effects. Remember that flickering an equipped creature removes the equipment.
Draw
Red's draw options are often conditional, but this deck includes efficient draw engines. Throne of Eldraine and Dragon's Hoard provide both ramp and card draw. Endless Atlas draws cards with sufficient lands of the same name. Ghirapur Orrery allows multiple card draws if you have an empty hand. War Room offers conditional card draw.
Mountains Matter
Several cards enhance Themberchaud's reliance on Mountains. Koth, Fire of Resistance adds Mountains to your hand. Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle deals damage when you play a Mountain. Downhill Charge boosts creature power based on your Mountain count. Demolition Field provides land destruction against nonbasic lands. Blood Moon and Magus of the Moon transform nonbasic lands into Mountains.
Dragon Synergy
Several red dragons enhance the deck's strategy. Nesting Dragon creates Dragon tokens. Brash Taunter and Stuffy Doll inflict damage on opponents. Terror of the Peaks deals damage based on creature power. Hellkite Courser brings Themberchaud into play without increasing commander tax. Spawn of Thraxes provides a backup to Themberchaud.
Doubling Down on Dragons
To overcome Themberchaud's high cost, the deck incorporates creature duplication. Orthion, Hero of Lavabrink creates copies of Themberchaud for massive damage. Blade of Selves creates copies when Themberchaud attacks. Helm of the Host creates nonlegendary copies of the equipped creature, circumventing the legend rule.
