As you climb in Slay the Spire, you will come across dozens of different events, enemy encounters, and boss fights. Each encounter will change your run in some way, from making you stronger to potentially killing you and forcing you to start your ascent back from the beginning.
The events you encounter are entirely random, and some events have their own random components to contend with, like the Face Trader event that has a 50/50 chance to reward you with a 'good' or 'bad' face. Below, we'll take a look at everything you need to know about the Face Trader event, including what each of the masks you can get from it do.
Face Trader Event, Explained
Face Trader is a random event that can occur during Acts 1 and 2, in which you will encounter a strange being who wants to trade your face.
You will be given three options, which are detailed below.
- Touch: Lose 10 percent of your Max HP, but gain 75 Gold.
-
Trade: Randomly gain one of the following Mask Relics.
- Neutral Face: Cultust Headpiece - You feel more talkative.
- Good Face: Face of Cleric - Raise your Max HP by 1 after each combat.
- Good Face: Ssserpent Head - Whenever you enter a ? room, gain 50 Gold.
- Bad Face: Gremlin Visage - Start each combat with 1 Weak.
- Bad Face: N'loth's Hungry Face - The next non-boss Chest you open is empty.
- Leave: Exit the event without doing anything.
While the flavor text for the Trade option says 50 percent Good Face, 50 percent Bad Face, the actual chances are 40 percent for a Good Face, 40 percent for a Bad Face, and 20 percent for a Neutral Face.
Should You Trade Faces?
This event has the potential to provide a massive boost to your build, especially if you get it early in Act 1. Face of Cleric is a very strong Relic that is stronger the longer you have it, and Ssserpent Head is similarly strong in the early game.
If you find Face Trader late in Act 2, it may be a better idea to take the Touch option and get Gold, or leave altogether, as the Bad Face Relics can be very detrimental. Gremlin Visage in particular can lead to a failed run, as the first turn of combat is often one of the most important.
If you don't mind save scumming, you can Trade Faces, check which one you would have gotten, then reload your save, which will put you just before you make the decision. If you got a Bad Face, you can choose the Touch or Leave options, but if you got a Good Face, you can repeat the Trade option and continue on.
Reloading your save doesn't change the outcome of the roll, but it can let you make a different decision.
