Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghana is here to usher in the new year, bringing one of the best entries in the series to modern consoles with some much-needed quality-of-life updates. While the game will still pose quite a challenge, especially if you're a newcomer, it is still a solid experience from beginning to end that we feel is worth having.
And what better way to break in the game's systems and mechanics than completing the first area that has everything from boss encounters to exploration to even secrets to discover, all leading to excellent rewards that will set you up nicely for the future when you tackle your first dungeon!
Upon agreeing to help find the Mayor after you get acquainted with the citizens of Redmont Town, you will be given a map and some Raval Ore, allowing you to upgrade your starting equipment before setting off to Tigray Quarry. After choosing which piece of equipment you want to upgrade (we recommend the Sword), you can immediately head out.
The Tigray Quarry will be a straight shot from Redmont Town, so just run straight ahead, killing the many Guffs and Riez' along the way until you reach the front entrance. Activate the Travel Monument nearby, then speak with Paul before heading inside.
Once you're inside the Tigray Quarry, begin making your way through it, following the only pathway forward. Here, you will encounter several Picmoles, these bee-like enemies that won't pose too much of a threat. After cutting them down, continue pushing forward until you reach a large vertical shaft with a series of stairs leading to the bottom.
As you begin navigating down the winding staircases that lead down the long vertical shaft of the Tigray Quarry, you will run into a couple of new enemies. These are the Gulms (Spiders) and Radels (Goblins), which shouldn't be too challenging to deal with. It is the first area, after all.
We recommend defeating everything you see here, as you will obtain a pretty hefty amount of EXP by doing so, allowing you to level up pretty fast, increasing some of Adol's base Stats. Once you're finally at the bottom of the shaft, you can either head left or right.
Head to the left first, as there will be a Travel Monument here, allowing you to Save your progress, just in case you die before having to come here a bit later. Once you activate the Travel Monument and Save, head back to the bottom of the shaft and head right, as you cannot do anything more here at the moment.
With your progress saved, you can now head to the area to the right of the large vertical shaft, having you enter a sizable room with many enemies and sets of stairs within it. We recommend defeating everything in this room, especially the group of Radels near the south-most portion of the screen, as you will get showered with EXP.
Furthermore, there is also a Chest in this room, so be sure to open it up after defeating all the enemies to receive x5 Raval Ore, which will surely come in handy once you get out of the Tigray Quarry. But, for now, you must pocket it and continue forward. So, head up the staircase and into the next section of the Quarry.
Moving up the stairs will lead to another fork in your travels, but the left path leads to a Pendant that you cannot obtain just yet, so you must come back to that a bit later on in the story. For now, just head to the right to encounter a Radel and a new enemy type, the Kayron, a corrupted bat that can be somewhat annoying to deal with, mainly because it's hard to hit when it's flying.
Dispatch the enemies and continue heading to the right to find a staircase that leads downward. However, before taking them down, run past them to find even more Kayrons and a pot at the end of the walkway. Defeat the Kayrons and smash open the pot to get a nice chunk of Gold. From here, head down the stairs and further into the Quarry.
Fighting off even more Kayrons and Radels along the way, you will eventually reach a Miner named Dewey standing in front of another staircase within the Tigray Quarry. Speak to Dewey to learn about a powerful enemy deep within the Quarry that cannot be hurt by physical attacks.
Dewey will explain that there may be something that can deal with them in the Storehouse of the Tigray Quarry and will give you the Storehouse Key, having you go and obtain it. So, before you can make any more progress in the Quarry to find the Mayor, you must first acquire this unique item.
Since you now have the Storehouse Key, you must now open the locked Storehouse door within the Tigray Quarry. The problem? Well, it's the locked door that was beside the Travel Monument to the left of the large vertical shaft from earlier. And, since you cannot Fast Travel quite yet, you will have to hoof it the entire way back there.
While it is sort of a nuisance to have to travel the entire way back there, this is the perfect opportunity to slay everything on your way back since enemies respawn when you leave and re-enter the same room. We strongly recommend killing everything again, as you will essentially be power-leveling Adol, making him more than ready for the upcoming encounters.
Cracking open the Storehouse lock - after Saving at the Travel Monument - and entering will reveal a sizable and empty room with an exit to the south. Approach the exit to be interrupted by a Sorcerer named Dularn, who will attempt to cut your adventure short, triggering the game's first boss encounter.
This fight isn't overly challenging, but it is a noticeable step up from the groups of standard enemies you've been mindlessly hacking through until now. Nonetheless, you will have to defeat him in order to get the unique item and progress further into the Tigray Quarry.
If you find yourself struggling on this encounter, we have the complete rundown of his move list and how to defeat him in a separate guide that we recommend checking out if you need assistance!
Besting Dularn will have him teleport out of the Tigray Quarry, leaving Adol alone for now. From here, you can now continue through the Storehouse, which will bring you to a small room with a lone Red Chest in the center. Crack open this Chest to obtain the Ignis Bracelet, allowing you to use Mana to hurl Fireballs at your enemies. Cool!
Now, for the bad news: You must run all the way back to Dewey to progress further into the Quarry. So, exit the Storehouse, Save your progress at the Travel Monument, and begin making your way back through all the rooms and enemies.
Like last time, we strongly recommend you kill everything on your way back through, as that's just free and easy EXP that will be extremely useful a bit later on in this area. It may be a bit tedious, but it is absolutely worth the time and effort it takes!
Hoofing it all the way back to Dewey will finally allow you to go down the stairs beside him, getting you further into the Tigray Quarry. As soon as you're at the base of the stairs, head to the left of it to find a pot and smash it open to receive a nice amount of Gold that will be useful for upgrades.
On your way to the bottom of the room, you will encounter the same enemies from earlier, so deal with them the same way you've been until you reach the ground level. Once here, you will see a group of Radels and a Kayron defeat them and begin to push forward to suddenly be ambushed by a few Mozuks.
Mozuks are the enemies Dewey mentioned earlier and are beetles with extremely strong shells that physical attacks cannot penetrate. Now you can utilize your new Ignis Bracelet, as Fire is very effective against them and can dispatch them in a matter of seconds. After they're taken care of, proceed to the right and into the next area.
Push into the next area to find a bridge with more Mozuks and Radels on it, and utilize your Ignis Bracelet to make quick work of them. From here, continue following the path forward until you come across a sizable gap in front of a waterfall. Leap across the gap and onto the other side and continue navigating down to the base level.
More Mozuks and some Kayrons will await you here; deal with them how you've been, and then head to the right and into the next area. While you're almost there, the next room is crucial, so don't just blaze through it, as there's an item in it that will help you tremendously!
Heading into the next room will reveal several Mozuks and Kayrons that you must deal with how you've been previously. After taking care of all the enemies in this room, do not proceed into the next area just yet, as there is a valuable item within this room that will make your life substantially easier if you snag it.
To obtain this item, head to the upper left-hand corner of the room to find an elevated pathway that leads to a section above. Hop up the large rocks and follow the path until you find an unlit torch against the wall. At the bottom right is an almost translucent Red Chest you cannot interact with.
Light the torch with your Ignis Bracelet to make the Red Chest solid, enabling you to crack it open to obtain a Ruby. A Ruby is a Gemstone that upgrades the Ignis Bracelet specifically, allowing Adol to charge it up before firing it, allowing him to create a bigger Fireball that deals substantially more damage.
Not only that but acquiring Rubies will also grant Adol faster Mana Regeneration and increase the damage output of the Ignis Bracelet. This is a crucial item to grab, as your next encounter is going to be your first true test, so ensure you grab it before going any further!
Having the Ruby in your possession means you're good to go into the next area, so take the large staircase down into the depths of the Tigray Quarry. As you approach the bottom, you will see a Travel Monument, so activate it and Save your progress so you don't have to repeat everything you've just done if you die.
An injured man will be standing to the right of the large opening; approach him to discover it's the Mayor, Edgar, who will thank you for traveling all this way to save him. He will mention a strange aura coming from the room beside him, which is your cue to go check it out. But, before doing that, head to the right of Edgar to find a pot and smash it open to get some more Gold!
Save once more before heading into the room, as once you do, you will be met with Ellefale, the Azure Queen of Death, who will be your first formidable opponent in Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghana. Unlike Dularn, Ellefale will put up a fight, which can be tricky to deal with at first.
Fortunately, like with Dularn, we have a separate guide dedicated to taking Ellefale down, detailing all of her moves, how to counter them, and how to deal maximum damage to her and take her down for good and obtain the Moonstar Statue. Again, this will be your first proper challenge of the game, so don't feel too bad if you're struggling here!
Ending Ellefale's reign of terror and securing the Moonstar Statue will have Adol exit her lair to discover Edgar conversing with someone. Let this conversation play out to get some shocking information on who that young man is and his aspirations, eventually having Adol and Edgar head back to Redmont Town.
Luckily, the screen will cut away, and you and Edgar will suddenly be in his house in Redmont Town, so you don't have to trudge the entire way back through the Tigray Quarry again (yay!). Let this conversation play out to complete this section of Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghana!
