When the minds behind the open-source Notepad released version 8.7.2 of the software, they snuck in an interesting feature. You’re now able to pin tabs to your toolbar with the click of a mouse. It’s semi-useful. It’s handy if you want to be able to quickly shift the tabs you think are most important in Notepad to the left of your screen.
However, you might also think it’s an unnecessary feature that you don’t need. If that’s the case for you, we’ll show you how to disable the pin tab in Notepad altogether.
How Does Pinning Tabs in Notepad Work?
Open Notepad and you’ll immediately see the new tab feature at work. Check your open tab and you’ll see a little greyed out pin icon next to the name of your tab.
A quick click of the icon adds some color and changes its orientation to vertical, indicating that you’ve pinned the tab. If you want to unpin, another click of the icon sends the tab back to its previous unpinned status.
Your tab is also sent to the far left of the entire group when you pin it, highlighting it as a tab that you want to keep around. Weirdly, Notepad doesn’t make it impossible to close that pinned tab once it’s assigned. You can still remove it by hitting the “X” icon as you would with any other tab. The only real differences are the highlighted icon and the movement of the tab to the left of the row.
That might be a little irritating in itself. It takes literal seconds to move a tab to the left of the screen by dragging and dropping. Pinning is a slightly faster way to achieve this, though it comes with the possibility that you’ll accidentally click to pin when you intended to move a tab manually.
So, you have one method to disable the pin tab in Notepad already. A click of the icon and the pin is gone. But what if you want to disable the pin tab option more permanently?
Steps to Permanently Disable the Pin Tab
Maybe the ability to turn pins off and on isn’t what you’re looking for. Perhaps you want the pin tab option gone altogether because it’s too much of an annoyance. You keep accidentally clicking it when you’re trying to navigate between tabs, perhaps, or you just don’t like how it looks when you’re using Notepad .
Notepad turns this feature on by default so you will need to follow these steps to disable it for good.
Step 1. Open the Notepad app and click the “Settings” option at the top of the screen. Select “Preferences” from the resulting drop-down box.
Step 2. Navigate to the “General” tab on the left-side of the pop-up box. It’s usually at the top of the list of options.
Step 3. Check out the “Tab Bar” on the right side of the “General” tab and look for the “Enable pin tab feature” checkbox. Uncheck that box to turn the feature off.
Step 4. The last step is easy – a quick click of the “Close” button applies your changes. You should see that the pin icon has disappeared from all of your currently open tabs and won’t appear at all for new tabs in Notepad .
If you ever want to restore the pin tab feature to its former glory, you should follow these four steps again. The only change is that you check the “Enable pin tab feature” option before you close the “Settings” pop-up.
