There are many ways to install the Java JDK on Windows, previously the Oracle JDK was used, but now since Oracle has made changes to the use license, it is recommended to use either the OpenJDK or one of the many distributions that exist, which are based on OpenJDK and add improvements and optimizations. One of the most popular is the Adoptium distribution, previously known as AdoptOpenJDK, which offers OpenJDK builds for different operating systems and architectures. Eclipse Temurin is the name of Adoptium's OpenJDK distribution. Download Temurin

Install Temurin

In the next window, we accept the license terms and click Next. We select if we want it to be installed only for the current user or for all users and click on Next.

In the last window of custom installation it is important to take into consideration the following options:

  • Add the installation directory to the system PATH.
  • Associate .jar files with Adoptium (allows you to execute .jar files by double clicking on them).
  • Create or overwrite the JAVA_HOME environment variable with the Adoptium installation path.

In case this is the only version of Java that we are going to have installed on the system, we can leave these options selected, but if we have several versions of Java installed, it is advisable to uncheck these options, since we could have some inconveniences when running some applications or working with IDEs such as Eclipse or IntelliJ IDEA, since these use the JAVA_HOME environment variable to know which version of Java to use.

Finally, we can change the installation path, personally I prefer to install it in the folder C:jdk-version, where version is the version of Java that we are installing, for example C:jdk-21. Once the options are configured, we click on Next and then Install to begin the installation. When finished, we click on Finish to close the installer.

Verify installation

To verify that the installation was successful, we open a Windows terminal and execute the following command:

java -version

If everything is correct, we should see a message similar to the following.
